I was on again last night and felt I took a step backwards, maybe because my ranking was a little higher I was going against better players.

Anyway, here is a perfect example of how I get taken out 9 times out of 10.

Large open area, enemy in front of me coming at me. He is not really close, so I use the scope on the assault rifle. He shoot the 3 round bursts which seem to connect, but at the same time he hits me with a couple of shots (which stops me from using the scope) and takes me down. I almost felt like I was playing GOW and had to take cover because anytime I was in the open field against an opposing player I was cooked. It was the first time playing that I started to lose that fun feeling and the frustration started to set in.

Any advice on shooting, aiming, etc you guys may have would be greatly appreciated. I could see if I was getting sniped, but they were using the same rifle I had.

I would be interested in hearing your strategy if you were in the same situation. Open field, 1 on 1 versus another player further away. What is your tatic to kill him?

Thanks guys.

I'd Rather Be A Smartass Than A Dumbass

Certainly sir.

But answer a few questions for me first to narrow it down.

Has the other player seen you yet?
What weapons are you both weilding?
What is the sort of distance between the two players?

1. Yes, he has seen me (we are walking towards each other)
2. Both have assault rifle (I think that is the name of the one that shoots 3 bursts and has a basic zoom)
3. We are pretty far apart so he looks small (tough to explain, but he is far enough that a grenade could not reach me if he threw it). The zoom on the rifle helps.

So you scope in and fire, he fires too and knocks you out of scope and he'll win 9 out of 10 times?

Yes

It sounds like you're relying on the scope too much. You need learn to fire accurately without using the scope.

Gotcha, I will try practicing without it. But it still seems he hits me a few times (probably 1/2 clip) and I am done. I realize I have a lot to learn, but I find this happens quite often. Almost like his first shot takes my shields down, next hurts me bad so I hear the beeping and then the next shot takes me out. Meanwhile I am blasting away and don't seem to get much off before I am out.

Easier said than done. I guess an good way to practice would be to play the campaign and get the "no hud" skull and that will improve your aiming reflexes?...right?...which campaign level is that in again?...

I SMOKE ROCKS

Hi monte4065ss as a complete n00b I'm having same problem. I just cant seem to kill anyone with the battle rifle. The thing that annoys me is that I aim at the dude and seem to hit them with 4 or 5 bursts but they don't die, where as I seem to get taken out in what seems like just 3 bursts. I aim for the head but to be honest that doesn't seem to make much difference. I think I just need more practice. I sent you a friends request by the way, maybe we can play a couple games together sometime.

That's the Blind skull, the only one you can get on any difficulty. It's right near the beginning of Outskirts.

Explosions of flavour
Check the ill-culinary behaviour

whenever i get the drop on some poor fool it always seems to take a good four or five rounds with the BR to take them down and yet i get repeatedly shot down in two bursts from having full shield!? Does it make a difference where you shoot someone's shield for damage? ie. if you shoot at someone’s leg twice compared to their head does it reduce the shield less? just seems illogical to me (i do understand head shots are best on unshielded opponents)

or am i just getting BXR'd all the time?

i can't tell...

The best is to get first shot, so when he starts shooting at you, you already have a little advantage. Then just continue shooting and strafe so maybe you can make him miss a burst or two. (only if you're lucky) If you realise he's gonna kill you before you kill him or if HE gets first shot, try to take cover, but make sure he doesn't finish you with a nade. You can run away, wait for him to engage him in close quarters or pop out of cover and fire a couple of bursts, take cover and fire some more bursts. If you going to take cover, make sure you face the opposite side of your opponent, run away from him and look down-> so he can't hit your head, it'll take more shots to kill you, thus giving you more time to escape.
btw: If you just started Halo it could be just your aim that gets you killed. Not really much i can tell you, but to practice and play a lot.

3 body shots and 1 to the head with BR will kill someone.

Thanks guys. There is no doubt in my mind that part of it is my lack of experience and aim. But I would hope that I could at least put up some type of fight against better players. There were a couple of times last night I barely got a shot or two in and I was down.

I will keep practicing and see what happens.

Sounds like you are getting double shotted to me. If you really want to work on your aim with a BR, then play some swat games. It helped me go from being a pray and sprayer to more of a sniper. It helps with the head shots on regular matches which everyone tries to go for. Oh and one more thing...dodge! Circle strafe like he's using a sniper rifle in halo 1. Also duck every now and then, just keep moving and you will be more difficult to hit.

I feel the same way about Halo 2 recently. It's cheap. I die with 3 BR hits when the guy has no shield and I got 2 SMGs at mid range.

Either you're playing against a pro, or you experienced lag, and you probably weren't pulse firing the SMG's

I've had similar issues. I think the issue lies in leading your target with the BR. It seems like the Battle Rifle tends to miss one of two of its three rounds if you just aim at the head of a far away moving target. One bullet from the gun isn't NEARLY as devestating as all three. Try to lead the target just a little. It has helped me out a lot.

Also, if the person/elite is running towards you, just aim for the body a little below the head, and then aim directly at the head when the shields drop. Don't lead too far from the head, just a milimeter or so. It should be enough to allow all three bullets to connect, unless the guy strafes, but to hit them then takes skill, not just basics.

Try this argument in a courtroom and see where you go:

"I don't consider theft a crime because it is easy to accomplish. Don't be hating on me judge just because you don't have the skill to do it!"

My advice is:

Don't worry about Halo 2's shooting technique, barely anyone will play H2 anymore when Halo 3 comes out in a little under a month.

Get used to H3's shooting technique ;)

I plan on getting Halo 3 once it is out. What is the biggest difference between the 2 in terms of shooting?

  • 08.30.2007 11:33 AM PDT

in h2 if you set up a split screen game with an idle second controller as your enemy, just run past him a couple times. you will see the reticule pull towards the enemy. the auto aim is bad. in halo 3 you have to be good to aim

First off, when you are distant from another person with a battle rifle, see if you can even see their name on your crosshair first. If you cant see their name on your crosshair, you MUST scope and try to strafe from taking cover, to getting out in the open again. Another thing is, if you CAN see their names on your crosshair, try your best to move up while moving side to side. Also, he may not be the only 1 shooting you, you might have gotten shot by someone else from up above at least once and the other guy finishes you off
