In the time it takes me to write this, Recon will probably have beaten me to it, but here it goes anyway.

Marathon is a series of 3 first person shooters made by Bungie in the mid 1990s. Originally, Marathon was on Mac only, Marathon 2 was on Mac and PC, and Marathon Infinity was on Mac.

Like Halo, it has a Sci-fi single player story mode, an insanely addictive multiplayer mode, and Marathon 2 and Infinity could even be played cooperatively. Marathon features a story that is much more complex, mysterious, and intriguing than any other game out there, even Halo. Actually, in many ways, Marathon was an inspiration for Halo. From the basic plot of a lone cybernetic soldier who must save the universe, to an alien enemy made up of many different races, to the Marathon logos that are strewn throughout Halo.

The greatness of the Marathon story can neither be overstressed nor totally described here. The link in my sig will take you to the most descriptive, complete Marathon site in the universe.

If you are a fan of FPS games with amazing stories, then you need to play Marathon. Check out the stickies at the top of the page to download Aleph One and M1A1 for Mac OSX or Windows so that you can try it out for yourself. The downloads are completely free. If you give it a chance, you won't be disappointed.

Recon beats everyone - if he posted any faster he would be replying to posts before the thread was even made! :)

Seriously - it's good to see that there are people still trying to keep the underground clean, and pointing new users to places where they can find the t7uth.

Change of tack:
Would I be right in assuming that marathon was the first game to have serperate levels for multiplayer and single player? As far as I can remember, any other mutiplayer FPS at the time used the same levels for deathmatch type gaming *and* the solo campaign...

I am not completely sure, but I would guess that it was the first. If it wasn't the first, it was definately one of the first. That other FPS didn't ship with seperate multiplayer levels. Even its sequels didn't have seperate multiplayer levels.

"Frog Blast the Vent Core!"

...that's pretty much the only thing I could say at the moment that wouldn't be redundant.
