Perhaps an analogy?
A mirror is like when you look at yourself in a mirror...it's a reflection of you, a copy. It's much the same with internet mirrors. They're just reflections, copies, or more appropriately, another server with the same file. People provide mirrors to files, mostly to ones that are in high demand, or if the person who made the file doesn't have a lot of bandwidth. This way, a person can download the file from another web site, which allows for less bandwidth usage on the persons website.
