On halo 1, why are the covenant attacking us on the first level if they want Halo? Am i correct in saying MC crash landed on Halo not knwoing what it was, and the covenant wanted the HALO to use as a weapon? But if so why were the humans being attaacked to begin with? Excuse me if i'm bring dumb, just want to clear this up, thanks.

Well there's a war going on between the two. The Covenant are on a religious conquest to wipe out humanity, while they were destroying the planet reach, the Pillar of Autumn Jumped into slipspace (you may remember Keyes saying that they made a blind jump). A few covenant fleets we're able to hitch a ride and beat the Pillar of Autumn there.

I believe that the Humans were always one step behind the covenant on learning what it was and what it was capable of.

Hope that helped a little, my Halo knowledge is a little rusty, haven't read the books in like a year.

The Covenant want to wipe out the human race and it's got nothing to do with Halo. While in the process of attacking and chasing the Pillar of Autumn, Halo was discovered by accident. It's not until the covenant start deciphering the artifact that they find out it is a "weapon".

Actually they found out it was a weapon after they saved Capatain Keyes (Level 3: Truth and Reconciliation)

Keyes: The covenant said, whoever controls Halo controls the fate of the universe

1. The covenant are eradicating humanity, and do not want them on that ring.

2. The Chief landed on it because it was the only land available.
