Subject: Severe overuse of the word "old"

I'm sure you've all seen it, mainly in the Halo 3 forum. Someone creates a thread with a link to a video, or an update with info on Halo 3. The the people who decide to respond proceed in posting the word "old" over and over again, even if the poster above has already done so. It can create quite a lot of clutter and bumps thread that are, in fact, old or spam and takes the place of the better, more deserving threads. I would like to see something done about this. It's as if those who are responsible for said action do it for the sole purpose of seeing their name in every thread. It is similar to the "No all caps title" rule, or the restriction of the "N" word. As such I believe it deserves a similar punishment. Perhaps a seven days ban? Or possibly more severe consequences.

But if it is old, should the OP not be told? I don't see a problem with it at all. If it's used in the way of spam, then the person will probably get taken care of.

And how would they know? Anything that is more than 10 minuets old is pushed to page three by threads complaining about this or that, asking what your favorite weapon is even before they have EVER played the game, re-living beat moments. It is sad really, and anyone who wants to have a good sharing of information about Halo 3, should probably go somewhere else. The closer we get to Sep 25th, the worse this will get.

Banning for saying "old"? Are you for serious?

Saying 'old' without linking to a previous forum post would probably be the actual cause.

That's not quite what I mean. If you go over to the Halo 3 forums, you'll notice that in some of the threads people post the word "old" over and over again. One time is fine, but when it gets to this, I believe action needs to be taken.

The trick is not banning the word, it's banning the attitude.

No, people say things are old even if it just came out yesterday. It is really bad.

Lol
"What game is better Bioshock or Halo 3?"
"Halo 3 sucks"
"What's the best weapon in Halo 3?"

God, that forum pisses me off..

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement
We're barely, we're just a collection of cells
Overrating themselves

Old = Someone has already posted this

Surely there has to be something better out there to complain about?

On a forum of this magnitude, you'll never be happy with the way people post. Just ignore it like the rest of us. If you ban one thing, they'll come up with something else stupid to say.

The only solution is to ban the attitude, or rather... The people. But that wouldn't be nice.

Old is one thing. If I were still a moderator, I'd be lopping off heads every time someone posted "epic fail."

It stopped being clever after about the second time it was used.

  • 09.11.2007 8:11 AM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

I'd be tempted to ban for that. It's one thing to let someone know that it's old news. Fine. But when all you have to say is OMG OLD, and like 5 other people follow suit, they don't really serve much purpose.

Well someone had to make the joke.

I avoid the Flood and most of the Halo 3 topics about recent announcements, because there's always some prick in there yelling about old news, as if everyone scours news sites at all times of the day.

This thread does reek of Ode de Chu.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Seriously, this is old too...

Haha, just kidding.
Everyone who just replies "old" to a thread should get a 3 day ban.

EDIT: DOH!!! Stupid modz made the joke before me :(

Turn west on Broadway, and right at the second light on Welchester Road. There is a dirt path about a 1/4 mile way up, turn onto it. When you hit the interstate 56 sign pull back onto the road. From there take the road 38 miles towards Wisconsin. Get off at Exist 73 and take that street to Vermont Road, and take a left at the stop sign. Go down that street to the fifth house on the left. Go into the backyard and open the shed. There you will find my leaf blower, its yours to keep.

people also over use the word "the" and "it" and "and"
can something be done against that?

Well saying just old is spam in my book, theyve acknowledged it but whats the point of it manifesting it in a pointless post instead of just ignoring it and moving on.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Posting nothing but "old" is spam In my opinion. If you're not contributing anything to a topic aside from a pointless and mildly insulting one-liner, then you're spamming. I usually warn people for posting nothing but "old" in excess. One or two and I don't mind. If a user's posting history shows a pattern of that kind of behavior, then that's a different story.

Though I don't think that banning the word "old" is necessary. If the people using it are being abusive, then that warrants some ninja action. Though to be perfectly honest, I'd rather they refrained from posting at all if they think its a repeat topic.

(Yes JAF, I'll be looking at your posting history next)

I totally agree. I don't ever post in a topic that a lot of people say "OLD!" or "SPAM". I try to let the thread die, but people always have to say the same thing over and over... >_<
