Now that you've taken the time to look at my sig, I actually regret not providing you with something more worthwhile.

Perhaps it's just me, but does it not seem like something has been lost in the B.net community? I'm closing in on 3 years within the Bungie community and I think fairly recently the site sort of lost its sense of self, so to speak. I'm honestly having a great deal of difficulty putting it into words, but it just seems to me that the mods are stricter, Achronos is snottier, and the general popuation is nastier.

If I continue, this will get to be a rambling mess(moreso than it already is), so I'll stop now, but does anyone else feel like anything that was special about this community is now gone?

It's not just you, I see it as well. Back in the day everyone was kind of this site and everyone that worked for the site was really funny and cool to talk to.

  • 09.11.2007 8:04 AM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

It's been like this for a while. Since Halo 2's announcement. I wouldn't want to place any "blame" on any one thing in particular, but there's no denying that some of the community feeling of these forums has been lost.

  • 09.11.2007 8:18 AM PDT

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

I won't speak for anyone else, but can you look in the H3 forum and The Flood and honestly tell me that that strictness is not justified?

True, it's not really the Moderator's fault. It's just the community nowadays.

I think it's a bit overdone in The Flood. I can't really speak for the H3 forum, because I never go there. It only took me a few visits to figure out I couldn't take the H3 forum. At any rate, I miss Shishka. I think that says a great deal as to the current state of the mods on the site. That could be directly related to the currrent state of the people making up the community, but either way, it makes the site less fun.

I'm not trying to blame the mods or anything of that nature. I'm mostly just curious if what I perceive as a problem is actually there.

He's still around, just without his big red cape. This also contradicts your "mods are stricter" sentence Meech. Because Shishka was arguably the strictest of all the ninjas. I should know, he spanked me 5 or 6 times. Luckily for me, I like the rough stuff.

As a whole, I don't see a big difference from 2-3 years ago. Maybe the Bungie gene pool is a little more shallow than it used to be with the influx of H3 elmos. But at it's core, B.net is still the coolest game site I've ever been to.

I would contend that the current mods are stricter and considerably less consistent. You knew what would get you banned with Shishka.

If Bungie was a community, I'd be happy to know that the law enforcement was really cracking down on crime. Although there sure would be a lot of crime.

Ah, so now we're back to the traditional "These mods suck!" Septagon complaint. That is off-topic (no threads about single users), and should instead be brought up with the moderator in question. Please, you think we made a mistake, tell us. I know I make mistakes, for whatever reason, and if you tell me sometimes I can fix them; in any case, it helps me to know what I'm doing wrong so I can do better in the future. I'm sure the other moderators feel the same way. We won't bite. At least not too hard. ;-)

Exactly. The moderators now would ban you for the most random reasons. I remember the first time I saw somebody get banned for just one word in their title being in all caps. It was.. sad

It did sort of take that turn, though it was not the intention. This thread wasn't started as a result of a warning or anything. I've had one warning since the update, it wasn't recent, and I did take it up with the mod that did it, although it was the digital equivalent of banging my head against the wall.

I do think the current state of the mod team leaves a bit to be desired, but that's not the only problem with the site ATM and wasn't the intention of the thread.

I really doubt that was the only reason. If it was, we make mistakes, and I'm sorry that we do, but none of us are perfect.

But we should get back to the original point because mod talk is off-topic and always ends badly.

You're right about consistency. But that's also unfair. You're comparing moderating ability between ninjas who were moderating since the internet was invented and a crop of new mods who just started. I betcha Shishka and Recon weren't as consistent when they first started back in 1945. It takes time, just like any job.

I for one expect more from the second coming of the mahātmā.

On topic: I think the intimacy that people remember can still be found. It might not be on the main forums of b.net, but it still exists.

Should I attribute the current suck of the community to their relative infancy? Why does Achronos seem to have gotten grumpier? Did things suck this hard just before the release of halo 2? What are you doing to my mommy?

Edit for Twinkie: Silly man. Groups died with the site update. There's as much intimacy on this site as their is in the Clinton's marriage. There's evidence that it once existed(a la Chelsea), but lately, things have been making Monica look doable.

I need a cigarette after reading that...

I have no qualms with the current mod staff. Do I wish they were on a little more? Sure. Do I think they should be on a little more? Hellz to the no. Because I wouldn't want people demanding I be on all the time. As to "consistency"; you would imagine that would be the case when a moderately large amount of people are taking their personal preferences into making decisions. It was probably far easier back in the day because The Chad was the "enforcer" and you knew as long as you didn't cross him, you'd probably not see a ban. Now, it's not so much because the mods take it upon themselves to say, "they should be banned." And blam, you are. Now, you can't just worry about only pissing off one mod...you have to worry about pissing off all of them because they will all ban your ass if they feel it's warranted.

Oh, and if you just now feel like Achronos is "snotty", did you miss him during the "custom games in the Delta" time-period? He locked/banned more people in those couple weeks than I have ever seen him do. And he should have. People shouldn't have been playing them and let alone posting about the stuff on here.

C'mon Meech, you've been here about as long as I have. You don't remember the wild west mentality of the Zanzibar forum? It was every bit as "sucky" as the H3 forum when H2 was released. I think you're just being nostalgic. Maybe there's more suck with H3 because of the new forum, more traffic and more hype. But that's just splitting hairs.

Why does Achronos seem to have gotten grumpier?

I don't see much interaction with Achronos, so I can't comment on this one too much. I only see him come down from the Ivory Tower once in as while to grace us with his golden hued text. Why do you think he's grumpier..............than normal?

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

If there was a good part of town and a bad part, then I wouldn't mind. if everyone was crammed and mixed together, I'd get headache fast.

We've lost some individuality. People are more like generic copies of one another instead of being distinguished members. Maybe that's what affects the community, maybe it doesn't. Other than that, nothing much has changed.

Times change, move along. Actually, I haven't really noticed that much of a difference. It's still the same place I love and hate. We get new members every now, others leave. Every month or so we get the usual complaint thread about how things used to be better. Than we get a thread full of praise for the little updates that have been made to this place. At heart, it's still the same to me.

Halo 3 and Optimatch are going to get an increase with people. The reason is becasue there will be alot of debating on what game types work and dont. I cant wait. More people dont even come on here because people get tired of the same random idoits. Heck even i stopped coming on here for a while. Wait 14 days and there is going to be alot of people on and u will see the mods more. We have different mods now. Some that will talk more and others just little cheap shots.

When I first began moderating back in '04 (That's 2004, not 1604, weggie), it was just stosh and I, and the site population was so low I was able to read every post. Back then, stosh and I could only edit threads, and bans were handed out either by Frankie or Achronos. By the time Achronos got us the ability to blacklist people, I had been sending him lists of people over PM, listing names and infractions.

You really think Achronos is "bitter?" Keep in mind who my enabler was, when I was a forum ninja. He has always been far more cruel a host than I'll ever be. That hasn't changed a bit.

What has changed is the population. Bungie.Net caters to thousands of people. These are big forums, now, not the smaller, less used forums of the perl days. And, the larger the group, the larger the group think. That is to say, there's a lot of morons on the internet, and when a lot of people congregate to one website you can expect to see an inverse proportion between population and intelligence. Your complaints now mirror the complaints made when Halo 2 brought in a new group of people to the community. The Halo 2 complaints are no different than what people said when Halo 1 brought new people to the community. The list goes on. Keep in mind that any complaint you have about the community now was probably made in reference to the wave that brought you to this website.

Keep in mind that the moderators are volunteers; they get no pay or anything of the sort for monitoring these forums, and in all cases except JAF's, they have real lives that will occasionally take higher priority (I jokes, I jokes!). This is exactly the same as when I moderated. The rules are the same, as well:

1. The Moderators are the law.
2. Bungie is above the law.
3. You are not.

Again, all that has changed is the population and the density on this website. And with the rise in population, so too must the moderators rise to keep some kind of semblance of control. As far as I can tell, they've mostly chosen not to follow my own rather draconian philosophies towards forum moderation, but despite that they've managed to do a damn good job keeping the ridiculous number of people on these forums from transforming the place into a cesspool of mental diarrhea.

Just shut the door and stay in your room until the screaming stops, and everything will be fine.

When Zanzi was around, you could have some fun with people without having the soul send you a message. Groups and The Flood were also reliable sources of amusement. That's not really the case now IMO.

Perhaps I am just being nostalgic, but I don't really think so. I was pretty much fine with the site until rather recently. Seems to me the "community" is a community in the same sense that a prison population is, just without the obligation to stay and less butseks.

Get off my mommy.
