Man. You can't get much more blatant than that.
Don't try and kid yourself that this is Bungie "paying respect to its fans." It works on exactly the same principle as the free trial cards. You play for free for a while and enjoy the experience so much you go for the full monty.
Just like the Beta. Bungie may state that it gets a lot of stick in such a way that they absolve themselves of blame, but the fact is that no matter how good Halo 3 will be (and it'll be awesome, I'm not going to deny them their skill at game development), they are definitely selling out ever so slightly
Forgive me Davey, but the term "sell out" just drives me crazy. Bungie is in the business to make money, how can you fault them for that? If you are trying to sell a product do you not want to sell as much of it as you can? Wouldn't you want to get the word out?
When MS gives away Trials, there is nothing the forces you to give them your credit card info. Just like getting the Beta for free, Bungie doesn't force you to buy the game on release day. Rather than "sell out," I think the term you are looking for is "Marketing."
This is nothing new. If someone makes a product that is GREAT, then more people are going to want it. The larger the potential market, the more you are going to see it in the media. This is a function Capitalism.
I don't see that Bungie has done anything wrong here. They have created something that will bring joy to millions. You should be so lucky as to be able to (as you call it) "sell out."
