I have a couple of questions. I'm planning on upgrading my computer...buying a new case, motherboard, video card, and transfering everything else. The video card I have now is the PNY make of the Nvidia GeForce FX 5900 (128MB). I'm looking at Nvidia's newer graphics card, the "XFX GeForce 6600 GT / 128MB DDR3 / AGP 8X / Dual DVI / TV." I'm using the Halo PC as a benchmark for my graphics because if I get the best graphics on Halo, I pretty much have the best graphics on everything.
When I play Halo with my current Nvidia card, I get great graphics (Decals, Shaders, Lighting, and so on), but it's not the best I've seen. For example, the assault riffle looks really crappy along with the cloaking (active camouflage). One of my biggest concerns is getting the highest resolution rather than 1024x768, which even then disrupts my framerate. Will getting a better graphics card enable me to set Halo on the highest (or high) resolution without the framerate going wild? Will more ram help (I currently have 512MB DDR)?
If you have other graphic card suggestions...please try to keep it under $300. Thanks.

ATi Radeon 9800 pro. That's the 'less than $300' version of my card, which owns.

I would say to get the x800, it doesn't have very big reqs, and is quite cheap ($500)

Heyyo,

Lol, yeah, $500 cheap.. of course it is... which explains me not splurging that much cash cause I'mma college student who's broke eh? :p

from what I've seen? the 6600GT's a great card. Good price, GREAT preformance. Nvidia's finally making some decent non-top-of-the-line cards with decent pricing again... took them long enough. :p

What's your cpu dude? cause 512MB of Ram's plenty for HaloPC (remember, it's a year 2000 game... not some new uber-massive terrain games like Far Cry, UT2k4, or HL2).

the FX5900's a nice video card, granted. For the FX series, Nvidia did a pretty crappy job of pricing the budget cards... making them all expensive compared to ATI cards... but now they seemed to finally lower the prices to ones much more reasonable for their preformance.

I know that you have a money limit but the best course of action would be to get a new, customized computer with the specs you want. The reason that people dont get the kind of action they would expect from taking out an old video card and jacking in a new card is because that computer, when built was completely alligned to work with the parts that were installed with it. New parts that are put in, by a person that doesnt know absolutely what there doing tend to run, I guess I could put it, jagged. There is absolutely no reason not to buy a graphics card that is better but I am just stating the facts.

halo runs on a b&w graphics card?
isn'y it the monitor that's b&w?
nvidia 6600GT is great. i ran halo at 1024Xwhatever with everything set on high. NO FREKING LAG. that rocked. now i wanna try it with the 'Halo: the Way it's Meant to be Played' mod. bet that rocks also

No, he probably doesn't have a b&w monitor. Some graphics cards especially including Intergrated graphics give you color, but the aliens and humans are colorless, making it annoying to tell which color team a player is on. Let's just say, if you're experiencing graphics like these, you're probably not enjoying the game. You should spend at least $50-$100 to get yourself an old 128MB graphics card.

Heyyo,

Err... guys? he HAS a NV GF FX5900 right now... that's plenty strong enough to show colors. His drivers are messed up, cause Nvidia's been messing up their latest drivers, try downgrading them 1st dude... THEN search for a videocard if it continues...
