Ok, I tried posting this in the official Xbox.com forums but I have not gotten so much as "shut the fux up noob!1" so I'm gona repost it here and with any luck get some help.

So I went out Friday and got the original Halo game because I wanted a refresher for when Halo 3 comes out. Booted up the 360 got the dashbord update (have not played in a while). Loaded up Halo, updated the game, made a profile, lauhcned the first level, and it froze. I let it sit at a blank screen for about 10 min before I try to reboot (the screen should have the loading thing on it but it did not even look like it started loading). I rebooted and cleared the HDD cashe (X X LB RB X X thing) and tryed the game without updates and the same thing hapened.

I am now at a loss for what to do, this website says that Halo: Combat Evolved is compatible for the 360, so it should be working.

Sugestions?

Well, thats odd. It might be your 360, mine freezes all the time while playing saints row and Official Xbox magazine demo discs. I don't know what other cause there could be. Is the disc scratched?

Are you reading this!?

"shut the fux up noob!1" I'm sorry I was just kidding. Now thats sounds like it sucks and I can't say that's happened to me in it's entirety but I have had Halo CE freeze sometimes. I suggest checking the disk for scratches or smudges ( I am aware it's new but you never know ) If the disk seems fine then try booting up Halo 2 or another Original Xbox game. If that works then try Halo CE again. If all else fails call 1-800-4MY-XBOX they might be able to help you.

The Flood's resident metalhead.

You know, it might be the game disc... try it on another xbox and see if it works.

I've never had that problem. My first guess would be the game disc itself.

Thanks everyone.
The game is used I bought from GameStop. It is scratched but no more then Halo 2 and that works fine. I'm going to take it back after work and see if they can resurface it (I still have to pre-order Halo 3 anyways).
Thanks for the suggestions finally.

Where does it freeze? For me, it always freezes when selecting a gametype in multiplayer.

It's not so much how badly it's scratched. Sometimes badly scratched CDs will work fine, maybe with a slightly longer load time for some things. But another CD with on scratch could potentially do something like your is doing, and make getting past even the first level impossible.

Well, gamestop said they could not resurface the disk but they had a $30 product that would do it for me (I needed a new one anyways...my Disk Dr. is really old). I also bought a refirbushed Xbox to try it on (gona end up moding it). After 3 runs on the resurfacer I got the game to play on the Xbox but still no luck on the 360.

I guess I should count myself lucky if it even plays on one system.

Wow, I don't know if Gamestop pays on commission, but if they do, you just made an employee very happy...

I would still bet on the disk being the problem though, because the Legacy Box and 360 have different DVD drives, and some drives are better at reading through scratches than others. Otherwise, it could be the same problem my 360 had, it had trouble playing some fully compatible games, and then it gave the RRoD. I ended up getting a whole new system... So I hope it's not that.

Snap the disk in half and turn one of the sides upside down. Glue back together. Always works.

PS: For the idiots out there, this was sarcasm.

I have the same problem. For me it loads fine until it gets to the second door in the game. Once I go through it, the game freezes. My copy is brand new, I got it at FYE.

Halo: CE > > Halo 3 > Halo: Reach = Halo 2

Exact same problem with me, exactly. The screen just hangs there in MP when i choose the game type. Used to work fine a few months ago, now nothing.

SP works fine, though.

Really ticks me off.
