Hey,

I was wondering what everyone thinks about the idea of Bungie making a Halo themed MMO? I've recently started playing World of Warcraft (WoW), which is my first MMO and have been absolutetly entranced by the absolutely massive scale of the open world that you can explore and the depth of the game. I would highly recommend this game to anyone!

Anyway, I had an idea when I was talking with a friend who has mostly played FPS games and is a huge Halo fan. I was trying to explain how an MMO works, and tried applying the MMO concept to the Halo world to try and convey the immense scope and depth of that type of game. After thinking about it a little more, I realized it could actually work for there to be a Halo MMO, and more than that, it could be awesome!

Listen to this...

Come up with a scenario where the humans and covenant end up on a halo together. Then map out an entire halo, that you could freely move around on and explore. I'm sure they would have to downsize the the size of the halo a little, as the amount of geography that appears to be on a normal halo seems a little overwhelming. But have a halo that is comparable in size to the amount of geography in WoW or other MMO's, with verying climates and landscapes (grasslands, arctic, dessert, coastlines, etc.). There would also be buildings, and caves, and all of the other fun things that we have fought our ways through in Halo and Halo 2. Except rather than being limited to a linear path of running though a tunnel, or a valley, or a small area, you would have free reign to explore the world in it's entirty at your discretion.

Now to talk about your character. There are a couple of ways this could be done. I would think it would be cool to first have the choice of being either human or covenant. Then you could pick a class. For instance, as a human, you could maybe specialize in heavy weapons, sniping, repair, medical, etc. As a covenant, you could pick from the multiple covenant species. Each class within each race would have different strenths and weaknesses.

Then starting out you would have minimal health/shields/armor/weaponry etc, and as time goes on you would gain xp and have the opportunity to upgrade these things. You would also have to train to learn skills, which could only be done at certain experience levels, like driving (a warthog, ghost, banshee, etc.) or using a turret, or using certain weapons. Now I would not recommend deviating from the fast-paced FPS style that Halo has now, but instead add in the character development aspects and free roaming massive landscapes of an MMO. Allow us to freely explore the awesome landscapes of a Halo while developing our character and fighting various enemies.

Rather than having "quests" like in WoW or EQ, you would have "missions". For instance, You would be at a base or outpost and there would be a NPC that gives you a task to go scout out an area and report back to with intel. Along the way you would of course get to fight various creatures/enemies. As you fulfill missions and continue to fight enemies, your xp will grow leveling your character and opening you up to enhancing your characters weapons, skills, etc. As with other MMO's the game would depend on cooperation with other players, and combining your the different skills of your player class to form good fighting/exploring groups.

Anyway, these are just my quick thoughts on what I think could make an absolutely awesome extension of the Halo universe. I'd love to hear what others have to say about it. Who knows maybe we can get Bungie's attention with this, and get them to make a game like this!

You have some awesome ideas. I have thought about the same things, the only problem is that I don't think it is possible. :) I want Bungie to move on to a completely new project.... a MMORPG perhaps? I'd buy it!

A huge problem I see with this, though, is how would it tie into the Halo storyline? I mean, both the games have been pretty heavy on story, and I have yet to see a MMO game with any semblance of a progressing story.

Who know's but I'm sure someone could figure out some tangent story that would fit in. We know there are multiple Halos, so all they would really have to do is write up a scenario in which a group of humans and covenant end up stranded on a Halo again. Much like the first story. There's probably a better way though.

The story could progress through server triggered events... But that might be too far up on the awesome metre to do XD

I'm curious as to why you didn't read the forum rules. Bumping isn't allowed. see, there are some ninjas lurking in the shadows, and they don't like that. These aforementioned Ninjas can ban you.

Sounds really kick-A, and yes it is all possible in the future for Bungie. We could even get a petition started, but the chances of suceeding are squat and the programming would be overwhelming. Nerve wracking for the workers. I'd like to think about their health. If you want we can petition up for a MMO game. I'll gladly help, but ,altough I have hope, CHANCES ARE SQUAT.

It's a cool idea but I don't think it would work.. first off because it is a shooter and not an rpg. How would PvP work? Combat wouldn't be able to be the same as the real Halo, so it would be just like any other MMO. It would be awesome if someway the combat was like halo multiplayer, but that would be hard to put into a MMO.

So why do people petition the Halo movie?

Bungie is the whole reason why I make video games and short films. Ninjas can think what they want. Polling=legal on this site, correct?

Actually you could very easily make Halo's combat into an MMO setting. Add in the learning that they originally had in Halo 2. Make it so only people of like levels can compete in PvP and I guess only in certain areas (doesn't have to be though). The enemies you find spread throughout the Halo can be taken down just as in the normal game. This would allow for much more intense battles than most MMO's currently exhibit. It could be alot like Planetside if you ask me. Just make Halo 2 a progressive environment.

And to the guy who commented on storyline in an MMO the Matrix Online is set to have a story for the next year already, laid out by the Watchowski Brothers.

All of this could be very easily done. Maybe for the Xbox-Next, be the Xbox's first big MMO. I can see it working and being quite sucessful. With the amount of time that Bungie puts into the things they do they could have an awesome MMO that surpases all competetion.

But they so recently put sleepless nights into Halo 2. I love Bungie and care about the people there like the humans they are. That's to much work for it to come out anytime soon. I would never push them into doing it either. So, maybe not for XBox-next for a long while. They deserve a break.

You do realize that MMO stands for Massively Multiplayer Online
(yes, i know it really is MMORPG)

So in all reality Halo already is a Massively Multiplayer Online Game. Ever hear of Xbox Live.

However i do not think that in any way should the halo series be turned into some hack job of and RPG. It would take away the first person perspective. And What in God's name would the storyline be. I do not think MMORPG's suck and I for one wouldn't mind if Bungie ever decided on making one; however, for the protection of the storyline DON'T TOUCH HALO!!!

Halo is a serious game. Not a game to screw up. They should start a new Halo Kindof thing if you want an MMO.

Dude an MMO consists of a persistent world. One that changes and stays changed when something happened. If you open the gate in Zanzibar in a persistent world it stays open for EVERYONE till someone comes by and closes it. Thats how it works. Thats a very limited description I know. But I assure you Halo is not an MMOFPS not to mention you don't play with 1000's of people in one game. You play with at the most 16.

the game shoudl have nothing to do with the story just like a lil exerp. and depending how halo 3 goes they could do this battle for earth make it free roam every where and have battles going constant where your there or not. then they could make it either human or covy.....

So why do people petition the Halo movie?

That petition is off of Bungie.net. It's actually on very shaky ground too. I've seen that thread get frequent ninja warnings, especially when they start to spill out of their sandbox and into other areas of the forums.

I couldn't tell you specifically why, because I don't know.

I have however, observed plenty of topics get locked and people blacklisted for petitioning.

Yeah, Recon's right. I'm a strong advocate of a Halo Movie and frequent these forums so I constantly stop by the Halo Movie Discussion thread. Although, (and I'm sorry to say this) some of our members are a little too rash and obsessed with the idea. I support the idea, but I dont advocate the act of annoying other people to hear our word. Yet, I must say this: everyone has their own opinion and whether someone agrees with it or not, the opinion is there and is going to remain (unless you somehow change that person's mind.)

Anyway, back to the discussion at hand. This is one idea that I wouldn't back. Your description above has many aspects related to all the other MMOs now-a-days. Achieving more experience, starting at a low item class or attribute class and gaining levels in those certain areas, it's all too played out. Unless there was some new, innovative, and revolutionary ideas put into this project (and the game would have to be connected to Halo's storyline somehow) then it would just be another run-of-the-mill MMO game.
