No.

in FoR, ch. 30 is an e-mail from codename: coalminer to codename: surgeon. It is not directly related to the story and the book reads perfectly without it. it concerns the shuttle Circumference, which is the ship the cheif went on instead of going to Reach. The gist of the e-mail was that the records of Circumference had been purged.

I was supicious of the name coalminer and thought of GoO, sure enough ch. 7 is another e-mail from coalminer to surgeon. It gives updates on the spartan 3 program and references "the lieutenant" probably Kurt.

I think that coalminer might be Mendez, but GoO email says, "Initial contact with base AI made." Mendez wouldn't say that. What do you guys think?

There are two groups of people in the world - those that hope, and those that wish. The first group hopes that nothing bad will happen. The second group wishes that they are there when it does. Which one are you?

Halsey. Johnson.

Or, Johnson may have been an S-1, along with Mendez, and was recruited to train the S-3's as well. Johnson would have been Halsey's spy, inside the program.

Gods gonna sit this one out.

Maybe you'll find out in Halo 3 or the new book. I don't know either, but i guess it could be Hasley and Johnson.

GoO occurs largely while Johnson is with the Chief, and it would have mentioned if such an integral character was present

Not necessarily. Alpha and Beta squads of the Spartan 3's died more than a few years before Halo: CE.
