I experienced first hand the absolute terriblity (yes, real word) that comes out of steam. Back when HL2 came out, I had an old HP with a 9550 thrown in for a little bit of gaming. My cousin got me Half-Life 2, and the strat guide. My parents, who wear -blam!-s on their arms, did not allow me internet access. They also saw a picture of a combine soldier getting his head blown off with a magnum so, in short, I had to wait till late 05 to get Half Life 2.
And despite the tendency of EVERYONE on this forum to bang on critically acclaimed games, I think Half-Life 2 is definitely the best single player game I've played in my life. I don't know what it was, but the whole story and experience put Halo 2 (and to a lesser extent, 1 and 3) to shame. Too bad I didn't get to play it when I wanted, thanks to piracy fears.
