Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Because I, and many others, have no desire to look at pornographic/disgusting images that will undoubtedly show up.

Agreed.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

The only way we would be able to do it is to have like twice as many moderators and we would have to come up with some type of Pic Cue or something that would have to wait and be approved by a moderator. Millions of images would be uploaded and would probally crash the server. I agree with you Prometheus.

No, for obvious and rather disgusting reasons.

You say tomato; I say potato.

I think there should be an option for good members, but certainly not new or bad members.
Either way, it doesn't matter because Achronos is hell bent on not allowing it.

Custom avatars are also an easy way for you to spot a moderator, in case you need help or something.

QFT

I'd like too as well, but I'm more than willing to give up that small amount of freedom in order to help keep the retards and ass-clowns in line.

Custom avatars would not only cause a problem with identifying moderators and administrators, but also take away from the Bungie theme. Just think about what people could upload such as inappropriate images, and pictures that have nothing to do with or are related to Bungie in the first place. Adding more avatars to Bungie.net, however, would be appreciated by many people, especially members that have submitted their own to stosh.

We should be defined by what appears to the right of our avatar, not by what graphics we have pasted into it.

What he said. And how many people do you think would upload adult content and other bad stuff?

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

No, custom avatars are not there to help you spot moderators. They are a perk that moderators get (and deserve) for their hard work. But it is silly to say that custom avatars somehow exist as a tool for users to spot moderators, considering that we have hundreds of available avatars. Anybody who spends enough time here to know when they are looking at a custom avatar most likely already knows who the moderators are. Also, because anybody relying on spotting a custom avatar in order to find a moderator is being misled and may end up asking Fraggy to lock a thread, looking for mods by looking for custom avatars is not the best way to go about things.

Oh, and not to mention that the bright orange text is way way WAY more noticeable.

We don't need custom uploadable avatars for members considering that, to the extent that you feel you want one, create it in Halo and use it here like so many people do.

Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

The idea isn't nearly as silly as you might think. It's just... outdated. There was a time not too long ago when we had only a couple pages of avatars, so around 40 or so... actually, I think there were quite a bit less not long before that. At those times, it really was a tipoff to a special member. You would see a member and think "Oh wow, that guy has a cool avatar, I've never seen that before." That might help explain why older members, such as TGP up there, still think of it as a way to help distinguish moderators from members.

As a side thought, we technically do have custom avatars. I have one right now.

How about this then. A request format. Like people can request and have someone from this website that will say yes or no.

I think we have more than enough avatar options on Bungie. We're all members of other forums, i.e. proboards, etc. We all know that not a week goes by that people don't post a questionable or obscene gif or avatar.

Besides, what makes B.net cool is how all the avatars are Bungie game centric. No one's pimping their Myspace page, blog, political views or poor sense of decorum.

  • 09.24.2007 10:20 AM PDT

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

I don't really care if we have custom or not. In fact not allowing customs is kind of neat just because it puts an emphasis on using your emblem for a custom. I'd just like to say that 1) I've gone to many forums that allow custom avatars and I rarely if ever see any pornographic avatars. 2) I would think the fact that moderator's post in orange is enough heads-up that they're not a normal user.

The problem with that is it would be too time consuming for the mods who are already on a tight scheduel as it is. There would be an overflow of requests from the large number of users on this site.

Personally, I like my avatar just fine.

Firstly, I recognize mods more by their salmon-colored text than by their custom avatars. Secondly, if it's a problem with obscenities then we can always restrict it to older members; Let's say three months or so? Thirdly, it's not going to "require more mods" or anything such as that. It would simply be added to the list of things mods need to look out for. I mean, did the rule against Halo 3 scans or the rules against Rick Roll vids require new mods to enforce? And Fourthly, almost every other forum on the web does this. So it's not like it can't work.
