Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

No, custom avatars are not there to help you spot moderators. They are a perk that moderators get (and deserve) for their hard work. But it is silly to say that custom avatars somehow exist as a tool for users to spot moderators, considering that we have hundreds of available avatars. Anybody who spends enough time here to know when they are looking at a custom avatar most likely already knows who the moderators are. Also, because anybody relying on spotting a custom avatar in order to find a moderator is being misled and may end up asking Fraggy to lock a thread, looking for mods by looking for custom avatars is not the best way to go about things.
Oh, and not to mention that the bright orange text is way way WAY more noticeable.
We don't need custom uploadable avatars for members considering that, to the extent that you feel you want one, create it in Halo and use it here like so many people do.
The idea isn't nearly as silly as you might think. It's just... outdated. There was a time not too long ago when we had only a couple pages of avatars, so around 40 or so... actually, I think there were quite a bit less not long before that. At those times, it really was a tipoff to a special member. You would see a member and think "Oh wow, that guy has a cool avatar, I've never seen that before." That might help explain why older members, such as TGP up there, still think of it as a way to help distinguish moderators from members.
