It would take half a second for a mod to realize whether or not a member had broken the rules with their avatar. If anything, a link to a shock-site would be harder to detect because spammers can label any offending link with a harmless sounding name causing some mods to, perhaps, pay no attention to it. But you can't hide an offending avatar.
So what would you suggest? Moderators go through every post, first check for obscene pictures (including threads that have 100+ comments), and then have to go through it again to check for obscene content? It might work in this forum, but not The Flood or Halo 3 Forums.
I'm saying that if a Moderator is already in a thread "moderating" it, then why can't said moderator simply rotate their eyes two degrees to the left and check if any member's avatar is offensive?

You certainly can't. But people can (and would) argue over the appropriateness and allow-ability of them. They would argue all day long.
But I'm sure all you mods already do that with text comments. I, for one, have been banned a few times for comments that could've went either way. And from what I've seen, most mods will stand by the pretext of "If I find it offensive, I'll ban you". Which would still work with avatars.
And then there would be those who would change theirs frequently. Unacceptable now, fine later. Back and forth.
Yes, but at the same time, people have an edit button and the ability to create hundreds of posts per day. If you mods can sift through all that nonsense, why can't you guys do the same with avatars?
Add to that the fact that it would be under a minute before someone simply put in non-Bungie related avatars. Family Guy, Simpsons, Gears, Sony, etc.
Perhaps. But would that really be any worse than having countless threads about that stuff in the flood?
If someone is unable to find a suitable avatar from the pre-set menus, their customizable Halo 2 emblems and their customizable Halo 3 emblems.... then they are (IMO) too concerned with their avatar.
I know that I care a lot about my Avatar. Too much? Maybe. But it just seems odd that we're graciously given sigs -- albeit less important sigs as of late -- private groups and our own personal homepage on Bungie.net, but it's the custom avatars that put us over the edge? I just don't get that.
