There were quite a number of complaints about Halo 2 in terms of how much it has changed since the first one. I'll just cover a few of the basics here. For one, all of the weapons including grenades have been noticably weakened. They just don't have that Halo 1 feel. I remember being able to down an Elite with a plasma rifle on Legendary in the first game. If I tried that in Halo 2, I'd get a barbequed Spartan. Also I noticed the abscence of some of the most frequently used weapons in the first game such as the assault rifle and human pistol (the magnum is a totally different gun). And the fact that there were so few weapons gave each one a special perpose. The needler was great for decimating Elite ranks as well as the plasma rifle. The needler also had a much higher rate of output along with causing secondary explosions of loose grenades and such. It gave the player a feeling of over all dominance with being overly unrealistic.
Another game killer was some of the new enemies. I felt like the Drones really didn't fit well with the Covenant. They don't really interact with the other species and tend to be nothing more than an annoyance and a waste of ammo. And yet we still have a bigger foe. Yes I'm of course referring to the magically accurate Jackal snipers. They kill the consistency of the game and make Regret (an otherwise beautiful level) a total nightmare on Legendary.
Well, in light of this, I thought it might be neat to go back and modify some of the maps and campaign to be more like Halo 1. Do things like trade up the SMG for the assault rifle, the magnum for the H1 pistol, increase the power of grenades, replace the drones with an assortment of Grunts and the snipers with normal shielded Jackals, etc.
Now I know there are a handful of people out there who ask "Then why don't you just play Halo 1 instead?" The answer is quite simple. I can tell you from experience that it's much easy to mod Halo 2 to be more like Halo 1 rather than the other way around. It's also fun to play with the updated graphics, dual wield, and of course board vehicles. If you have suggestions or have things you think should be included, feel free to post your ideas in this thread :-)
