Whenever I read an FAQ and get to the bit about the magnum, it always says that it is basically a peice of crap. Now, im not a noob, I play on legendary, and I practiced dual-weilding pp and magnum, it could kill any infantry on that level in 2 shots! Using it is fun, like a satisfying to use, skillful version of the noob combo. And I think, after playing through much of outskirts on legendary, (until I ran out of ammo) that used this way it can be more deadly than it's halo 1 counterpart. I think that the magnum deserves much more credit than being ignored.

Criticisims, interesting discussion, please

If I can find a magnum in Matchmaking, I dual wield pp and magnum. I call it peacemakers. It is fun to use this way and I think it can be very deadly. I guess the problem is making this combo work in match making cause u can only take on one person at a time and have virtually no long range capabilities.

Yeah the Magnum is deadly when you're using it against a target with no shields. One pistol round to the head after the shield is gone is lethal but you're basically praising one redeeming quality of the Magnum; the headshot ability and to utilize that you need to drain the shield some other way (with a weapon combo, melee or grenade) because it takes a mind numbingly long time to just fire off a whole clip and even then you need to be fairly close to land the shots accurately. When there are much better weapons in the human arsenal that can headshot AND be effective and accurate on their own then why bother?

...that used this way it can be more deadly than it's halo 1 counterpart...
IMO it's all thanks to the insane tracking ability of the PP in Halo 2. Nearly all your work is done when you release the overcharge. All you have to do is land a single headshot but tell me how you faired on Jackal snipers with this combo on Legendary. Did the Magnum have any range or accuracy like the Halo 1 pistol did?

Well the magnum's range is real pathetic and it sometimes has this random collision problem when you think you got an elite in the head but it misses, so that would probably mean less auto aim on H2 but on outskirts I managed to (after the first part of sniper alley) sneak between all the buildings and scare them into dropping their beam rifles. On some jackels (the ones with open ground in front of them) i had to use BR, however.

I know that magnum is overshadowed somewhat, but I mainly use it because I miss the pistol from halo CE. It is perfect if you can get 1v1 against an elite, though.

I don't think it's a collision problem when a shot aimed at their head misses. The Magnum is just inaccurate. Just shoot at a wall from a reasonable distance and inspect the bullet holes up close.

The Magnum is only similar to the Halo 1 pistol by it's appearance and clip size. I feel the Magnum is an entirely new weapon in Halo 2 designed to be very weak to accommodate duel wielding and that the real pistol from Halo 1 is disguised as the BR.

Exactly. It's explained in the H2 CE DVD. The AR worked like a sub-machine gun while the M6D behave like a rifle. And therefore, the BR is NOT the new AR! It's the child of the M6D. The SMG replaced the AR!
The Magnum is too inaccurate to use it noob-combo-like. But combine it with the SMG for short range and you have a pretty deadly weapon combo.

Magnum strength was reduced in H2 multiplayer, because it was being over-used. Research showed that dual-weilding magnums became overly popular, other weapons were being ignored. The original magnum was something like 8 shots to reduce shields and kill. It was changed to be 13-14 shots to reduce shields and kill.

Because of the differences in the multiplayer code and the campaign code, that change did not get moved into the campaign. So, on campaign, the pistol is very strong, while in matchmaking, it will probably be called weak.

I have to agree, SMG plus Magnum are one of my favorite combos. SMG to kill the shields, Magnum to kill the target.

I'm not really sure about the power, but being reduced in power as one person said, the accuracy should have been dead on, and it really isn't even at a reasonable range, sometimes I think it is less reliable than the shotgun.
