Subject: Dedicated forum for older residents

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

My guess is that it boils down to elitism which this forum seems to hate so much.

No, people will certainly incorrectly label it as elitism though.

Any forum not accessible to all members IS elitism. Telling someone that they can't post in a forum because their join date doesn't meet the criteria is short sighted IMO.

What purpose would this serve anyway? There are a ton of older members that are just as retarded and immature as they were two years ago. Conversely, I've seen many new members contribute greatly to interesting threads.

"Elitism" has it's own definition on this forum that does not necessarily correspond with the dictionary definition. Because "arbitrary cliqueishness" is a little bit too cumbersome and sounds a bit too much like middle school.

Become the hunter.

No they should not do that. A public forum should not be limited to older members. A join date really doesn't mean anything. It would primarily be abused by elitists anyways. If someone is too weak to deal with new members, then tough luck.

A group would work perfectly for an exclusive forum anyways.

That would be amazing I've been wanting this for a long ass time.

"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me."

Who would be counted as an 'old' member? 2004 people and earlier?

I think it would be kind of cool, but at the same time, it's just another forum for the moderators to watch. It'd be the new Flood I think.

Like I said, it'd be cool to have one, but I wouldn't mind if it never comes to life.

looks like there's mixed opinions about this topic. the only problem i see is that the people that want something like this haven't really put anything on the table as to why it would make sense. I think this is partially because of the defensive stance needed concerning "elitism".

hey weggie, haven't talked to you since i ran into you on the beta. moving on, if join date was the only criteria needed i would totally agree, but i think the member's history would be considered strongly. i know some older members have caused the biggest problems, and i'm not going to name names because they don't deserve the attention, but they wouldn't meet the criteria

What purpose would this serve anyway? There are a ton of older members that are just as retarded and immature as they were two years ago. Conversely, I've seen many new members contribute greatly to interesting threads.

idk. i just wanted to discuss this because i could think of reasons for and against it but i needed some more rational discussion. i can't always trust the two brain cells i have left rolling around in my head fighting over the last piece of cheesecake. it is nice seeing some of the new member's posts that actually contribute to topics. hopefully they stick around (i can't say that without thinking of ol' arnold).

2004 or earlier, even though that would count me out lol, would probably be promising if the population was large enough for the effort. maybe 2004 and earlier or 3-4 years as a member regardless of join date which would put me or people close to my date a little while to go. i agree with your last sentence completely.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I still say age/member time isn't adequate grounds to count someone as stable enough to participate in something on the lines of what you're asking. Besides, like Foman pointed out, we need to lead by example; direct example, not something regarding "Do well and you might get into this forum that you can't see right now."

That said and understood, I don't feel that a group would in any way accomplish what the poster has put forth. We need desperately some kind of standard that is officially recognized. Granted, we can't have most forms of elitism and stricter application of forum rules don't seem very popular, but if we keep putting down progressive ideas (disregarding how left-wing/right-wing they may be), we are never, as an active community, going to move on.

We'll be virtually stuck in a seemingly feudal period. People complain that they have no rights here, or that there's little to no cohesion here. Of course there isn't, very, very few people here are willing to put the community, the forums, before themselves.

We're not here to blog. We are not here to insult. We are here, regardless of what you think, to share our opinions and feelings on Halo. This is the sites purpose, this is why we joined. If we don't start actively supporting this, enforcing this, then we'll remain stagnant...for a long time.

If a private forum were to be established, it's make more sense for those that have proved themselves worthy and mature enough that should be allowed in. I see plenty of new members who are worthy of engaging in a good 'ol discussion. Wouldn't make more sense to create a private groups? Then you world have control of who joins.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

If the webteam could get the trust system hammered out, it might be the appropriate catalyst for this idea. However, this idea is still somewhat unnecessary, because we already have groups.

I don't think waiving a carrot in the form of an "exclusive forum" would do much to encourage new users to post sensible and coherent things. Most of them are here on a side note. They're interested in Halo 3 more than this community.

I've always liked the more or less equal status that this site allots all of us. Breaking it with an unnecessary dedicated forum would be a bad thing in the long run.

My two cents; no thanks. We really don't need a forum for "good" or "older" users here.
