Since we’re all dabbling in conjecture, allow me to offer what I believe we’re seeing.
Bungie grossly underestimated the amount of data we’re throwing at them (which grows everyday as folks finish their campaigns and start playing online…not to mention that game sales are still soaring).
There’s already been over 50 million online matches, and averaging 8 folks per match, that’s almost a half-billion player/match records. And as we all know, there’s a lot more being stored from a Halo 3 match, than its predecessor.
I noticed early that during heavy gaming hours, stats were not promptly updating. I thought back then that Bungie may be headed for a crash. Sure enough, scalability quickly became the issue and they just couldn’t keep up. So, they shut it down.
And as your reading this, Bungie’s crack team is sequestered in some conference room… with the smell of endless, shower-free hours in the air, waste baskets overflowing with Starbucks empties, and whiteboards covered with some illegible scribble. Realizing that time is their worst enemy, they’re trying to solve this puzzle, or worse yet, find a new approach.
Meanwhile, their PR department is framing some language to gently break the news to us that all our game histories since the October 5 were never stored, and we’re all going to revert back to where we stood on that day. That’s right all you Captains out there. You’re going to be busted back down to Sergeant.
But, mind you, this is just my crystal ball speaking. I’m no fly on Bungie’s wall. And, I’ll probably get my butt banned for this.
But hey…isn’t conjecture part of the fun in these forums?
Given that a lot hhave been updated and some havent i'm still optimistic, having said that your theory could prove entirely correct mate.
If they say now, atleast you know its going to happen and i might even bother playing the single player again, if they dont and i get further up the ranks and medals etc. and they bust me down when they could have told me......well CoD 4 looks good is all im saying!
