My PC is:
Shuttle SK83G
512MB Corsair Ram
AMD64 XP 3000+ 2GHz
S3/Via Hyperion # K8M800 Motherboard with Built-in Video Card

When I play the game, polygons flicker and overlay each other. and it stutters.
Could it be I just need a new video card? If so, what do you suggest for under $150 USD?

your problem is the integrated video card

to replace it i would suggest looking for one yourself, because there are many sellers that will sell products for very low prices, and there are also some third party manufacturers that use nvidia and ati chips that are in most cases cheaper than the card made by the manufacturer.

You can get a ATI radeon 9600 xt for under 150 if you look.
perhaps you can get better, i did not look long
of course you have to make sure what you want to buy is compatible with your motherboard. With the specs i see i highly doubt you will have any trouble.

Heyyo,

Yeah, here's some cards to look for good deals for by order of preformance in HaloPC:

NV GF 6600GT
ATI Radeon 9800 PRO
ATI Radeon 9600XT
NV GF FX5700
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO

There's barely a preformance gap between the FX5700 and the 9600 PRO, so if the 9600 PRO's cheaper? go for that, ATI tends to do better in all games.

Heyyo,

actually, funny you mention that. Since HL2 was BUILT for PC's, it runs WAAAAAAAYYYYY better than HaloPC. I can crank that sucker to pretty great visuals and barely lag down my comp. ;)

I tend to play like this on HL2:
screen rez: 800x600
geometry, textures, shader detail, water detail, shadows = high
and the game runs beautifully. Firefights do knock down my framerate but not that badly. In firefights I think my frames drop to 17F/S at the most. :)

On HaloPC?
screen rez: 640x480
textures, particles = high
specular lighting, shadows = off
and the game runs like crap in firefights... usually 10F/S...

Here's the minimum requirements for HL2:
700MHz cpu
128mb ram
dx7 videocard

What the HaloPC community agrees on for minimum requirements for HaloPC for it to run decently is this:
>1.0GHz CPU
256mb ram
dx7 videocard

Heh, dude, even if you put HL2 in forced function (transform & lithing only) it still looks and plays leaps and bounds better than HaloPC on low-end computers. Valve did a great job on optimizing the engine for all computers... HaloPC needs a lot of work... and Halo's an old game, it should run way better than HL2 on my comp.... damn you M$ for -blam!- over the PC Gamer community. As soon as I get winex working fine on linux operating system (I'm using RedHat's Fedora Core v3), I'm gonna switch to that. If you havn't tried any linux operating systems? it's FREE, and runs WAAAY better than windows, ESPECIALLY ingame. Check out this benchmark of Linux whuppin' windows in Quake 3 Arena.

http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20020531/windows_gaming-04. html#quake_iii_arena_windows_v_linux

Remember, WineX is just a little directx emualtor, and emulators never run perfect. Winex is actually no longer officially supported. Cedega is their new product, which's supposed to have incredible preformance, even for an emulation. ;)

I also suggest everyone: DON'T BUY THE NEW WINDOWS! IT USES GRAPHICS RENDERING! IT'LL KILL YOUR FRAMERATES INGAME!!!

M$'s been doin' some lame-ass crap, especially compared to before when they were decent... At this rate I'll just have Fedora and windows 98 on my comp....

my card does really well in halo, even at agp 4x

Heyyo,

LOL! *EGO-EGO-EGO-EGO-EGO-EGO-EGO-EGO....* =D

Ok, checked out that mobo for the 1st post dude, and YES, you can get a good videocard, it has an AGP slot. :)

[url]http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=6& id=1274[url]

Ok, a Compaq Presario is a Desktop PC, NOT a laptop... forget the laptop series name...

I had an old Compaq Presario, it had an AMD K6 with intergrated graphics... needless to say, I upgraded to one kickass videocard... check this: 3DFX Voodo 4 32MB PCI videocard... w00t! lol! man, I loved that videocard, I should've kept it as memorabilia. :)

Ok, I'm sure newer Compaq Computers have a AGP Slot. Here's one way to tell:

- Turn off ya comp, unplug all plugs connected to it.

- Depending on how much of the case you need to remove Unscrew the back of the case, only the 4-6 screws along the sides and top.

- Remove Cover(s).

- Look inside, at the bottom there should be a few white-colored slots (PCI slots), now above it there should be 1 black slot (AGP slot). IF that black slot is missing? then sry, you might not be able to get a good videocard in there.. you can still get a PCI one, but that's slow cause PCI's an old bus... too old for good videocards..

This is a pic of the 1st post guy's mobo, see the white slots, and that black slot beside it? that black one's the AGP:

I hope that helps you out man. If you can tell me the numbers of your compaq presario, they're usually on the front of the case, says "Compaq Presiario 4567" or something like that... I made up 4 random numbers, yours will probably vary. Anywho, tell me the numbers there, then I can check stats onnit to find out if you can fit a good videocard in there. ;)

BTW, my main tip for creating custom comps is go with the 3 A's: AMD, Asus, ATI. Dunno what type of mobo Compaq uses, but I'm guessing they have agp slots nowadays...

right. sorry about that laptop thing. i was confusing it with something else
(reminds me of french class)
anway, i'm sure you can put a new viedo card in. i mean, you can modify a dell in that way.

i am pretty sure that agp slots in presarios are brown

i have also seen red and green agp slots

i guess the way to identify them for sure is to look at the slot itself
it is a little smaller than the pci slot, and typically has a hook/latch/lever of some kind on one end to lock the card in.
they are also set a little farther back on the motherboard than the pci slots.

if you dont have the agp slot, then you cannot upgrade your vid card without getting a crappy pci one (way way not worth it)

another spec i would look at is not just that it is agp, but what kind of agp, if the information is available. there is agp 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, and different combinations of those. make sure you get one that matches your slot or you may end up with a voltage mismatch and fry your brand new card.

for instance i have a agp 4x/8x card, and my motherboard is 2x/4x, so i run it at agp 4x.

if you POSSIBLY need any more info about video cards just ask, i know just about all there is to know about em (ati ones anyway ;) lol)

hey man! your integrated video card is killing you like a -blam!-

go to www.mwave.com and search for a 9600 xt by ATi and theres one for 140 bucks!

this is a kick ass deal....go for it! but if you want to spend some money for an uber card like the 9800 pro, then thats up to 200 bucks...but hey it all depends on how much money you want to spend

how much do you want to spend anyways..?
