i have all my graphics set to highest, and usually set my resolution to 1024 times 768 and runs pretty well. but when i get in big firefights there is some lag, so i sometimes set it down to 800 times 600 and is flawlessly smooth always.

my question is does turning the resolution down this much effect the graphics noticably? because i cant really tell, which i guess is a good thing. and does resolution effect the graphics at all? also, would it be better to have resolution high, and maybe turn down one of the other setting in order to keep smooth play.

Heyyo,

Buddy, letme explain to you the miracle of monitor resolution. :)

First off, YES, screen resolution affects framerates, in some cases, dramatically, here's why:

Now, when your comp renders anything, it has to take into account the dots per inches (DPI) on your screen resolution. 640x480 is obviously gonna have smaller amounts of DPI than 1024x768. Since they're dimensions, if tyou times them together you get the amount of DPI:

640x480 = 307200 DPI
1024x768 = 786432 DPI

As you can see, 1024x768 is over twice as much DPI than than 640x480. Since there's a higher DPI count, everything will look more crisp and smooth than on lower resolutions. If you wanna prime example, get HL, play it at a res of 1024x768, then crank it down to 512x420. you'll almost cry cause of how bad the game looks, lol.

Another advantage to higher Screen rez is the rendering lines, at higher resolutions, it seems to push them farther back than usual (or this could just be a figment of my imagination...)

So yeah, for newer games, since they have much more complex geometry and textures and special effects, you need a pretty big cpu to handle higher screen rez's. So the more visually stunning the game is, the more framerate killing it'll do. :p

Right now I have a smaller cpu than you, so I can't handle bigger resolutions without large losses of framerates. So right now, I play the game at a screen rez of 640x480, if I go higher the gameplay becomes unbarable during firefights.

1600x1200

I have Geforce 6800 GT, however the invisible shield still doesn't render correctly.

I typically keep mine at 1024x768, because it is usually the default for monitors, and if the pros think that 1024x768 is good, then 1024x768 is proably very good.

when playing single player or 1-4 players online i use 1024x768. but otherwise i use something more modest like 800x600...

i use 1024x768
it runs great all the time.
i get a little drop in framerate every now and then but i fix it by just looking in a different direction

and these "render lines" someone mentioned may be the filtering caused by anisotropic filtering. if you want those pushed back, just set the anisotrpic filtering higher. although im not sure if thats what you are talking about

Heyyo,

Can't do antiscoptic, or anti-aliasing, doesn't work in HaloPC cause of the rendering sytle, they changed it for scope zoom and invisible effects.

THe closest thing you can do to remove rendering lines is increase your screen rez..

and I don't stalk people... though I do look like a Mexican, lol. :p

1280x1024 here. No slowdowns, my active camo also doesn't render correctly (stupid fade type instead of watery looking stuff).
