Hello. This post rather belongs in The Flood. But anyway. It may be that your Xbox has a Thompson drive, which is infamous for turning up 'Dirty Disc Errors' (DDE's) mainly with dual-layered discs. Since you bought it in 2002 I don't think you have warranty anymore, because else you would have been able to turn it in for a new Xbox with a Philips or Samsung drive. There are pictures of how to identify which drive you have, but I don't know where. I hope another member can provide the link?
In conclusion, I'm affraid you have to buy a new Xbox if you do have a Thompson drive :-(
