There definetly needs to be subforums, and we don't have ENOUGH ban happy mods here. 2/3 of the threads here should be locked or moved. All I see everyday is teh same -blam!- being reposted. No one searchs for anything. They need to enforce a "search, then post" rule.

***please keep this topic active because it's a pain in the ass to look for things in this forum.***
***** my topic has been moved from Halo3 to community forum so please vote with the H3 forum in mind *****

This post only has to do with this forum.

I doubt it's wrong to voice an opinion so here it is...

I think there is too many ban-happy mods in here. Of course some people are creating threads with questions already answered in the stickies but imo that's not a reason to BLACKLIST them from a forum. They were asking a legitimate question and they get blacklisted from the whole forum... not fair.

If, lets say, my mom would be an Halo fanatic and would ONLY come on the internet to check the news and read THIS forum... I wouldn't expect her to know how a forum works... what is a sub-forum... what is a sticky... and so on.

This ban-happy trend is really ridiculous.

To Bungie: that's what happens when EVERYTHING is crammed into the same forum. I strongly suggest you make SUB-FORUMS to keep everything organised instead of banning people because they couldn't see through all the junk in here.

Haha. I just asked the same question. Read mine to hear my reasoning... I don't feel like writing it all out again.

true but ive been on alot of other forums before and people dont get banned for posting questions already answered. Maybe give a warning or simply lock/delete topic.

Adding subforums would result in less people annoyed that complain about the same questions getting asked over and over. And less work for the moderators. Even the most simple forum system has the sub-forum feature.

I don't see one single reason to not have them... and so many reasons to make them.

Wow. Finally, a classy moderator move. It seems like they are so quick sometimes just to block it, instead of offering an explanation.

How many times should an explanation be given?

Ignorance of the rules doesn't exempt you from the consequences of breaking those rules.

On Topic: Most of the OP's suggestions already have forums devoted to them. The only ones I see that might be useful are seperate forums for campaign and multiplayer.

I could care less that you locked mine... if you look at the explanation up this page a bit, you'll notice I said I just asked the question... in other words, I believe both of us were writing our threads at the same time. I wasn't calling you a "scoundrel" because you locked my thread, I was saying what I said because you assumed what you have been doing for years is easy for people who are picking up Bungie.net for the first time since it has become so interactive with Halo 3 stats and fileshare and whatnot... I believe your exact quote was

This thread is locked and your idea is faulty because (as you have so clearly demonstrated) people do what they want where they want, no matter how easy you try to make it for them.

I posted in the Halo 3 section, where I thought it belonged, but I was wrong. Instead of answering my question, or referencing the similar one posted as I was writing mine, you tried to make me look like an idiot. Notice the question I asked in the correct section was answered respectfully by just another fan, who noticed it was a question and not some idiot who SHOULD have known the answer. Otherwise what is the point of questions? Or this forum for that matter? You could have answered it, and told me it was in the wrong section. So I'll take that warning you sent me and stick it in my right pocket. Here's a warning for you: I will own you on Halo 3. Maybe.

',:\ IF YA SAHMELLLL

Halo 3 needs to be split into multilayer and campaign or some other arrangement. There is just too much traffic for there to be only one forum. Though I completely understand if the moderators only want to have one forum to coup all the Halo 3 posters in.

I move one and I am classy, I lock an identical one that is created minutes later and I am a scoundrel.

Just call me Sybil.

=O Now you're being a smartass jerk!

Also, I used this analogy before when dealing with sub-forums:
Say you spill some unknown gross, smelly, substance. Instead of cleaning this substance, you just spread it around. That's what sub-forums will do to Bungie.net

Subforums work on most forums, but not ones that see this much traffic. See how many people already post topics in the wrong forums? Making sub-forums will make that number exponential.

It's called the crap theory.

(Number of Idiots x Number of Forums)^(number of sub-forums) = the number of topics that need to be moved and locked.

  • 10.10.2007 10:33 PM PDT

Sub forums would just make things more complicated than they need to be. Keep the forums the way they are. As for blacklisting people that post the same thing over and over, I'm all for it. If I was a mod I would do the same thing. People have been told to read the rules/stickies before posting, and there is a search button for a reason. There is no excuse for just disregarding the rules. I know some people will say thats not right or fair, but when you signed up for this site the short version of the ToU was "You have no rights, play nice."

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

I don't understand why people think that having sub-forums equates to things being too complex. Its as if people think the average IQ here is 5. Just look at the Halo 3 Online system and tell me THAT isn't THE most complex system you have seen on a website. Its more complicated than an FTP!.

Sub forums organize, they don't complicate. That is what they were made for. I support them since it would ease the moderator's jobs as well as make it far more apparent where things go to the members. Here is a list of how I would cut up the forums:

Bungie General
Bungie.net Community
+ Discussion
+ Game Troubleshooting
+ Bungie.net Troubleshooting
Halo 3 Forum
+ Campaign
+ Matchmaking
+ Forge and Customs
Optimatch
+ BTB
+ FFA
+ Team Objective
+ Team Slayer
Off Topic
+ Polls
+ General
Halo 1
+ Campaign
+ Multiplayer
Halo 2
+ Campaign
+ Multiplayer
Halo 1/2 for PC
+ Halo PC
+ Halo 2 Vista
+ Halo Custom Edition
The Gallery
+ Fan Art
+ Bungie Images
+ Media/Videos
The News Forum
+ Bungie News
+ Community News
+ The Classifieds

What I did was moved The Polls and Classifieds to sub forums, which actually simplifies the system and gives them a more specific use.

Searching wouldn't need to be used as much as it does if bumping was allowed. We don't have post counts anyways so why does it matter if someone bumps a topic. This would keep topics at the front of the page longer as well as keep discussion to one topic. Bungie.net is the only forum I attend that has banned bumping and I really don't know why they did.

PS: sorry for the double post. I would have edited but this computer takes forever to load up that particular post for some reason.

UL7IM4 G33K: Your system looks pretty good. I guess we'll see how everything shakes out once the hype for Halo 3 goes down a bit, since I think fewer people will be posting. But I still think it might help a lot. The Community tab is a bit of an eye sore for people not used to it (i.e. the people who post in the wrong section). I like your system with expandable sub-menus. We'll see in time though, Bungie has their hands full.

As for asking questions, I use Yahoo! answers a lot, and one of the things they do is this. When you begin typing in a question, it pulls up all similar questions that have been asked with keywords like your question. The results are exact matches of what you are looking for. I don't have much web-building experience besides a couple years of HTML, but i wonder how hard a feature like this would be to implement. Granted, Yahoo! Answers users still post the same questions over and over again anyway, but I bet fewer people ask the same questions than they would if the feature wasn't there. Just food for thought.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I see nothing wrong with sub-forums except for the fact that it would mean somewhat more work for the moderators in terms of number of forums to keep an eye on. I think that it would help in the reduction of repeat threads, as a thread in any one sub-forum would stay on the front page for longer (and we all know how much people loathe visiting the second page of any forum).

At the same time, I have little trouble following discussion in the Halo 3 Forum, but that's probably because I'm pretty good about using the search feature and checking page 2 and 3 of the forum. I think that if we were able to better encourage everybody to do this, we wouldn't need sub-forums at all.

After reading Recon's post, it made me realize how close-minded my original post seemed. I'm not against sub-forums (mostly because I would use them as well), but I'm very able to recognize that they wouldn't work on this site.

Have you seen how many Halo 3 topics have been posted in this forum alone? It's ridiculous. Also, there's the tired excuse of "I know this is the wrong forum, but I figured more people would read it here." That's annoying, and to be honest I wish it was punishable by blacklist. It doesn't help that people reply to it (resulting in bumping it to the top and saying "OMG Classifieds are that way"). I'll sometimes PM people that genuinely look like they didn't know the posted in the wrong section and I got a reply saying "Why the -blam!- do you care?" (I got that reply recently, by the way - but it's not the first reply I've got like that).

This problem would only increase with sub-forums around; I hope most of you can see that.

Nobody in this thread is the reason we wouldn't get sub-forums. Go to the H3 forum and read some of the replies and threads posted. Maybe I'm being too much of an ass when I say this, but they are the reason we won't get sub-forums.

Also, I've seen other forums enforce the "no-bumping" rule but they're much less strict. An OP can bump his thread once in 24-hours and they'll be fine, but more than that and it's a lock.

I like the once every 24 hours thing... but there is so much traffic on this site, it would have to be once every couple of days.

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

I'm all for sub-forums. Anything to at least help somewhat with there being so many topics being made in a single forum. I like coming to B.net better at late night because there are less people on and pages actually stand a chance to have discussions.

With as much traffic as this site gets, it's best to just have a "no-bumping...ever" rule.

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

Anything on a forum CAN turn into a war: Post counts, avatars, signatures, etc. But that doesn't mean it will. If you added a rules similar to what was said above - Bumping before a (24, 12, 2, .5) hours is a bannable offense - then you might not need to worry too much. Its really easy to see bumping, since it is generally just a double post made to quickly and with the purpose of bumping.
