There's a key difference between best storyline, and best expressed storyline. A story has to be told the right way in a game.

I never played Myth, and it's a tough decision between Halo and Marathon but I pick Marathon. Who didn't enjoy all those scary shadows and dark places? Not to mention the storyline...

It's not compatible with my computer either, that's why I use Aleph One. source.bungie.org To play Marathon 1 with A1, go here http://archives2.bungie.org/a1sdl/m1a1_sdl.zip .

Dudes, if you think about it, bungie has a habit of making ridiculously addictive games. personally, i have played halo and myth. Myth was slightly b4 my time, but my big sis played it 24 seven. i just got my special edition xbox, and my mom is making me run a mile every day before i can play it. :( oh well. halo's worth it.

Subject: Best storyline, the slow fall of the Bungie fan base

You know, I'm not so stunned by these results. Myself, I think it's a close call between Marathon and Myth, but Marathon wins for sheer depth. Halo is a good game, no, a great game, but its presentation of story does not have the capacity of the text-based medium. Both Marathon and Myth had interludes of pure story, and that treatment of the plot of the game gave it more importance.

As for the other bit of content mentioned in the subject line - the slow fall of the Bungie fan base - I believe that these forums are already lost. I've watched discussions on so many different topics break down to mindless, uninformed jabbering, which then descends into flame wars. Of course, there remain here and there the titans of reason and enlightenment that are Marathon Fans... but they are but specks in the night, being brilliant enough only to illuminate the macabre masses of stupidity that now worship our sacred providers of entertainment.

I felt the need to post this, I don't know why... I'll probably just get jumped on, or a worse fate, ignored.

Nonetheless, I seek those of the old school! Prove you're still here, vote or at least speak your mind!

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

While I may not be old school (it's not my fault I'm only 15, and my dad didn't let me play computer games until I was in 5th grade, and even then it was only RTS until like 2 years ago), I agree with you totally that there are too many new people here because of the new hotness that are just total spazzes. And I would have played Myth and Marathon if I had heard about Bungie before Halo, and if I had had a mac...
And I would play Aleph 1, but I'm too lazy to figure out how to get it to work :)

One of the first Bungie games I ever played was Abuse for the iMac, and my aunt had a copy of Myth which I used to play around with when I was at her house.

For all of you confused people let me put it in a way anyone can understand. Dont get me wrong myth and marathon have great storylines. I must say that halo probably has the best storyline game to date. I say this, because not only can there be hundreds of possibilities and twists in the ending, but it has sparked a major fan base, over 4.5million sold, and if you ask a person what they liked best, 75% will say storyline. If you sit 5-7 hours and play the entire game(like I have) only then can you appreciate the true storyline of halo as it unfolds. It was released 2001, and is still considered the best game on xbox, the most powerful gaming system to date, mainly because of storyline. There are whole chatrooms, boards, orgs discussing and trying to figure out whats gonna happen. whole websites made on storylines. There. Argue to that.

Unfortunately, most of that fan base is illiterate. Also, most of this writhing mass think that SP sucks and MP is great.

Unfortunately you're right, most people today don't give a rat's ass about the story in a game, they only care about the amount of destruction and death. That's probably why pychological horror games (Like the Silent Hill series and Fatal Frame) don't do as well as the newest shoot-em-up Doom clone. I played the Marathon demo, and although it was confusing where I was supposed to go, the terminals were interesting, and I wish I had a crappy mac so I could play the series.
-EDIT-
D Von what is your sig from? I vaguely remember it from somewhere, but I don't remember what.

Like as if it was from an old dream? Hehe! It's from a terminal in Marathon infinity.

To savvy: I don't know why I didn't include Oni.

Man, screw off graphics, if the game doesn't have a story line, then it isn't even worth playing. But if it has both, hats off to them. oh, and what type of game is Marathon?

The only game of Bungie's i have played is Halo (so i did not vote in the poll) but i would really like to play the Marathon series. I don't have a Mac or anything, only a PC so my question is this: to undertstand Marathon 2's story, do i have to play the origional? Im not going to buy a Mac to play one old game, but I really want to be a proper Bungie fan, other than just a Halo fan. Thanks for any help.

Just as a sort of side-note, I think an amazing extra with the Halo 2 Special Edition would be a Bungie 'classics' range, like some other companies do. Slightly updated, graphics wise, versions of Marathon and Myth etc. and maybe the 'old' RTS Halo, because it would be interesting for new fans, and bring older fans to nostalgia-induced tears. It might seem unrealistic to do, but is was just an idea.

I decided to vote for Myth for several reasons. First of all, although Marathon is supreme, I love fantasy games and Myth is as good as they come.

Pathways into Darkness I didn't like as much and even though it is a precurser to Marathon, I feel that Bungie really refined the story between the two games and therefore the Marathon story is better.

But Halo?? Honestly people, Halo's storyline is like reading a childrens picture book in comparison with Marathon or Myth.

I really loved the whole story and setting that Bungie created with Myth and I also loved the maps and the narration detailing their route as the game progressed.
Also I finished it, took me a bloody long time but eventually I chucked that sod's head into the big hole and FINISHED THE GAME. The hardest thing I have ever done in my opinion and I am still proud, not a single cheat I used. All sweat and blood, mostly spilt on the part of the Fallen Lords.

By the way, just thought I'd edit this becuase reading through the posting three people came across to me as being reasonable, intelligent people who are fighting for an obscurity in the face of comformity (Or marathon and myth in the face of halo) and these three are D Von, Ghandi 2 and Jjarro (who has a funky quote), for me, these three represent the peak of common sense and are totally not your average Joe who bases a game on the sheer viceral content but actually goes deeper and creates an experience mainly from the stories.
After all, what is an game without a story, you can play a text based game and enjoy the lack of graphics. You try to play a brainless shoot 'em up and you cannot get anywhere near the levels of enjoyment because the graphics don't matter, it is story which pulls you in rather than having the sweetest graphics.

Sorry if I ramble on, but I care very much about this matter, the majority my friends at school don't show anywhere near as much common sense as they should do from going to a secondary school of such calibre.

First of all, steve. You have showed me that there is hope for the Bungie fanbase. Secondly, you do have to play Marathon 1 to understand Marathon 2, but don't worry! Go to source.bungie.org and download Aleph One. After that, Download Marathon One for Aleph One ( http://archives2.bungie.org/a1sdl/m1a1_sdl.zip ). You then put the files in the M1A1 folder into the Aleph One folder. Tadaa! Marathon One for da PC!

That would be awesome Ninja Steve, like on RTCW you can play the origanal wolf 3d after you beat the game. And there wouldn't be any need to update the graphics, but I don't think it will happen because I think it would be pretty hard to get a mac game to run on an xbox.
