Ok I know that there have been a few people that have written about this "Rimmer BSC, I MRB I" topic.
I would love to ask the question though to bungie. Why not Make Halo CE Compatible for Xbox Live Arcade?
You would only have to put one programmer on it make a menu for Multiplayer for live, Or even do what XBC does and system link option to another box.
It would not be that hard at all, and it would be doing what bungie seems to like doing and that is making money.
Thats all you would have to do dont mess with the gameplay just add a feature for live thats it.
It would not cut in to sales of Halo 3, which is a good game and much better than H2.
People are Not going to Not buy Halo 3 and finish the fight. It would give those people who helped make the game what it is today a kind of thank you.
At the same time giving those people who didnt play it when it came out a taste of what people who love the game so much are talking about.
I could tell you today that if Halo CE would of been Xbox Live Enabled that you would have sold more copies of Halo CE then you did.
I know when I went shopping for a game I looked for the game that was Live enabled and pay little to no attention to the game that didnt have it.
So Bungie find it in you hearts and make this happen and gain all of your respect back ten fold and make everyone happy.

I like me.

That would require re-writing the whole game. Adding LIVE is harder than it looks.

Guilty sparked is right, it would require a lot more work that it may seem.

And are you, my good topic author, going to re-write and compress a 4.7 or possibly more gigabyte game for Xbox LIVE?

Still, good idea though. Although a classic is a classic for a reason. Untouched and preserved.

If this was too happen (very unlikely IMO), I would like to see it as an add on mode to Halo 3. Don't change the engine at all, just add it on, don't even need to update the graphics or anything (although being able to use your armor upgrades would be cool). I think it'd be a nice change of pace to go fro mthe 3 AR to the original AR... with that nice crackling sound 8)

At the very least, I wish they would add all the CE and 2 maps for the Halo 3 engine... that seems more likely than a stand alone Halo:CE. I don't think that'd happen, but I can always dream.

If you're really dying to have it, there is always CE on the PC.

After cutting single player and compression you could get it down to a reasonable size. I mean, the Halo 3 beta was just over 1 gigabyte and people didn't have a problem waiting to download that.

And people have proposed the exact same idea of putting it over Xbox LIve Arcade as well. This has been discussed before.

Definitely alot more work than one programmer, but you don't have to rewrite the whole game. That's silly.

All the design work into the levels and maps is already done. That work would not have to be redesigned from scratch. I'm not saying it wouldn't be a hefty project though. I'm sure the sales are there in any case to justify it.

Look at the 3rd party that ported H2 over to Vista? It can be done...

I've seen some pretty elaborate demos and betas before. I'm sure they could squeeze it onto a hard drive.

I know I've left out three maps but if this is going to be a game that's totally stored on the HDD then we need to make some compromises.

Don't enhance the graphics and leave out all the CE PC stuff and I really think it'd fit. Hell I'd pay $15 bucks for it. And that's pretty good considering that the only cost to Bungie is the hours spent fiddling on the computer to do it.

They could use whatever game finding system that is the cheapes. Custom lobby or matchmaking and I wouldn't care.

If I had a Rocket Launcher...

Shut up and get behind me... Sir!

The cable. I'm going to cut it.

Awesomeness would ensue.

Halo came from a differnt era in the FPS market. Perhaps it was even the end of an era.

In the original, multiplayer was a no-holds-barred blast to play. You had clearly defined weapons, then you had the weapons that were jacks of all trades. In this game, you had to be on your toes to survive, and you can't rely on any one method on anything. The kids on Live are unable to see weaknesses, and will get frustrated at how the Banshee continues to take them down as they rush it in a straight line. Banshees were a threat that had to be carefully dealt with if you were on foot, and even more so in another Banshee.

Of course, this is hardly the case in Halo 2 and 3. Homing missles/rockets have nerfed the Banshee, like so many things have been nerfed in Halo 2 and 3.

If Halo Trial is any indication of how xbox live would handle it, it would be a failure.

True, BUT adding a PATCH that replicates what XBConnect does to connect boxes by system link is VERY possible.

Very, very true. That'd actually be a pretty clever way of adding online multiplayer, especially in the 360 port.

Just a clarification for the unaware...
The Xbox 360 uses the DVD-9 format, which holds ~8.5GB worth of data.
Halo:CE was installed from CD-ROM, which holds (at max) 700MB of data.

If Halo:CE were re-created for Xbox 360, all of the single-player was cut out, and the graphical quality was left the same... Bungie could likely compile it into a download that was between 500-900MB
Any of you out there that play the demos on the XBL marketplace know that they are generally somewhere in that size range.
Alternately, it could be distributed in disc form.

The main problem is that in order to release an Xbox game for the 360... it would have to be ported, which is a difficult process. That's why original Xbox games run through an emulator.
Doing this would be a lengthy and expensive process, and would also require Bungie to add more server bandwidth in order to handle the load. It's not really financially worth it for them. Especially since it's not clear whether or not people would actually buy the thing. Face it, it is old and Halo 3 is the cool new kid on the block.

^ Good post.

Keep in mind, if they cut out the single player levels, they also cut out all audio components except for weapon/vehicle sounds, environmental sounds, and various other non-essential audio data.

Also, campaign levels, scripting, and AI would be removed for this as well.

All that remains is the core programming, some sounds, and multiplayer maps. Even if they included every single map (Halo: CE & PC) I'm pretty sure it could be made fairly small.I've downloaded some pretty big demos, and the wait wasn't that long.

As for putting it out on a disc, I'd gladly pay 60+ bucks for it. Anything for my halo fix *twitches*

Well Enough Alone...

~"The people who play Bungie games tend to sense that there's something behind the games that's attractive to them. Then they become fans of the games. And then they become rabid fans. And then they become employees of Bungie."(Life story) -Marty

Maybe have it in too parts, one the single player, one the multiplayer. Or maybe they are plannning on doing something like that already. Bungie just hasn't had time to work on halo ce live with halo 3 and all so they'll take a break, work on their next project(s), and add live to halo ce in their spare time, then ship it as a multiplayer game only on xbl arcafde. it could happen. but i wouldn't get my hopes up.
