PC Setup:
Intel Motherboard
Intel P4 3.06Ghz w/HT
1GB PC1066 RAM
ATI Radeon 9700+ PRO 128MB Video Card
SoundBlaster Audigy
Western Digital 250GB w/8MB buffer 7200rpm
WindowsXP Professional Service Pack 1

Now this is the problem I'm having. I played the game and finished it with no problems and even been playing it online without problems. I didn't play it for like a month and now the CD-ROM won't even load. It starts and I see the small Halo screen then it goes to the big Halo screen and then the game closes and I see a "Exception!" warning that states it is gathering exception information. I've tried everything I could think of from updating drivers to even back dating drivers. I know I'm not going to update to SP2 tho. To many issues. No matter what I do it acts like I have a damaged CD-ROM but yet it has very very little to almost no wear and tear marks on this thing. Any ideas?

heres what i would do
first check for viruses
if you dont have a scanner theres a good free one at avast.com

if that doesnt solve the problem (i doubt it will)
it could be your cd drive
if it is an older drive, then yuo could be getting read errors
i had one that was 5 years old. it wouldnt read anything

if thats not the problem... then it may be the sp2 deal
if you have the latest display drivers and crap, a lot of them will require sp2 to work properly
and i dont know what "issues" you are talking about
i have no issues at all

Hey, I know what you are going through. Check for viruses. If you can't find any viruses, make sure you didn't mod anything. If you did, see if you can fix it. If you can't, autorun the Halo disk, click re/uninstall, then check the Repair corrupted files. go through the process. Change everything. (this will require re-updating Halo).

First of all, try doing what Heero Yuy said. The reason he suggested it was because, when that warning pops up, it means a bug, that is, a virus, has infriltrated the program "Halo." And when a virus gets in, the computer detects it and brings down the Halo program so it can attempt to isolate that virus. Thats what " Gathering Exception Data" means. So here are my suggestions. Delete halo and reinstall. But if you dont want to do that then just try a broad spectrum scan. That is a full computer scan. And a suggestion that I would do. Go to " My Computer" double click on your " C" drive or whatever is underneath Hard Disk Drives. This will bring up a list of programs. You might get a warnign stating that it is not wise to mess with these programs because they are integrated but just skip that and go to the programs. Then go to the program marked "Program Files." This will bring up another list of programs. Look through them until you find "Microsoft Games." Click on that. There you will see the folder "Halo." Right click on it. If you have a type of virus scanner, then when you right click on the folder " Halo" you will see your options and among those options should be "Scan Virus" or something similar. I hope that this is understandable so good luck.

OK. I see what you folks are getting at but that is not the case. I have no viruses and as far as re-install goes I had the HDD zero filled and re-installed everything (ie: Windows, Drivers, Game...etc.) It's not the CD-ROM drive being old. System is just over a year old and this problem occurs no matter what CD-ROM drive I put the game in.

Any other suggestion I might be missing?

are other games affected?
and
hold your CD up to the light (realy! do it NOW!)
rotate cd slowly in hand
at the same time tilt the CD back and forth
how many big scratches do you find? how many little ones?
