I saw another e3 demonstration from this years e3. It was the same one by Joe staten but it was it was being presented by someone else. He said when your duel wielding you press y to put your second weapon away and melee, B, to throw away the second weapon.

Would it not make more since to hold Y again to drop the second weapon?

Well, it's an extra weapon, not really one of your main weapons. Like using a longsword, then picking up a knife to augment it. If you switch to a longbow, you're going to throw the knife down, put the sword in it's sheath and put some arrows in your foe. (Er..I was just thinking about Morrowind ^_^). So you hold 2 weapons, but if one is one handed, you get an extra. Like a bonus.
