I am a Floodian

Good work everyone. I am personally surprised by the communities current amount of self restraint and growing maturity. The moderators have also been doing a wonderful job.

However, we live in an apocalypse obsessed world, so it is only appropriate that it also applies here. I am gonna ahead and remind the community of some problems that, as amazing as the moderators are, we should watch our for in the near future.

1. The Flood: While that beautiful is always under speculation and scrutiny, right now is a even more dangerous time than normal. Impossible you say, well I say it isn't(ooh, clever).
Key problems:
- New members not using a search button.
- New members making insults, that aren't funny or relevant... but thinking they are because regulars seem to do it.
- New members being... for lack of a better word... noobs(as in: newer members less accustomed to the way things work, not the OMG PWNED NOOB, noob).

- regulars pretty much being generally pissed off to their breaking point about all of this.
- regulars being very well organized compared to the newer members
Good news:
- many new members are beginning to find their niche
- regulars are beginning to find out more about, and get more comfortable around the newer members.
*unfortunately this is only a few member
BIG ISSUE: Massive tensions are there right now. People who visit relatively frequently know what I am talking about. It's something you can't put into words.
Halo 3 forum:
I am no regular here, but every time I go these are the general problems I find

Key problems:
- members making stupid/ constantly repeated posts
- seemingly no (visible) moderator enforcement for the spam
BIG ISSUE:The forum is just general chaos, it makes the Flood and, dare I say it, Zanzibar look tame.
Good news
- these problems are overrated
- their are quite a few respectable members there.
BIG ISSUE:The forum is just general chaos, it makes the Flood and, dare I say it, Zanzibar look tame.

Groups, yes groups:
This isn't so much of a OH NOES DEATH, but more of a what to look forward to happening.
Many groups were built up in anticipation of thing to come in Halo 3, and what could happen... now what. This is not a bad thing or a good thing. For one, this could lead to a larger amount of groups becoming inactive than normal, but then seeing new ones created, or more members going back to the public forums. In other words, groups are going through a very large transition right now, and should be noted.

Ah, but where is the discussion in this thread. That's your job you silly wittle readers. What do you guys think of the apocalyptic predictions I have set forth. Am I overreacting, under reacting, not looking at other issues that are there, or should I just STFU?

No one in the halo3 forum uses the seach feature so we get the same topics everyday on the front page. Why arent the mods doing anything to stop the constant "STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT HALO3 NOOBS!" threads? They are spam and annoying.

I would tell the new members to look up to the regulars but there arent any. Most of the halo3 members are people that just joined to post for a few days and then leave. Ive been posting there since the forum first came online and its just total choas. Its getting better but these repeated topics need to stop.

Good to see at least somebody takes this place seriously

I am sincerely disappointed in everyone except JIMH. JIMH, have a gold star.

',:\ IF YA SAHMELLLL

The Flood hasn't changed in a year and a half since I started taking notice. Only the batons have been passed.

The Halo 3 forum on the other hand, has become insane. Lukem's recent thread is a good start. I think the Halo 3 forum needs to do what Optimatch used to a while back with its Hot Topic threads. Major repeat topics were covered in one thread and all others that were copies or similar to it were locked on site. The only thing I worry about for that idea is that if the Hot Topics were too broad, you would just end up with hulking 200 page threads.

Groups seem to be dying fast. They need the changes they were promised a while back.

Yeah, I have noticed them. I post there maybe a couple times a day. It is the same for the Flood but I have the Flood open more often. Though, there are definitely some members that I have noticed seem to be adding possitive responses to even the most negative ninnies.

  • 10.16.2007 3:20 PM PDT

The Halo 3 Forum is a lost cause, at least until the traffic dies down. There's no way the ninjas can keep on top of all the duplicate threads and flaming going on with the amount of thread and post creation going on there.

What bothers me is now the Halo 3 forum is effecting all the other forums. People are posting their Halo 3 related questions in other forums because they know their thread won't drop off the first page in five minutes. Now whether they're doing it maliciously or they're just new is up for debate.

None the less, it's annoying as hell and I can definitely tell it's affecting the overall morale of the other forums.

For the first time since joining B.net, I am actually considering looking for a private group to join.

I think the problem of the Halo 3 forum can be fixed with more (at least 50 total) moderators, split forums (SP-Gameplay. SP-Story, MP-General, MP-Matchmaking, Maps, Forge) and a 7-day ban for posting Halo 3 topics anywhere but the Halo 3 Forums.
But will Bungie listen?

Not sure about 50, that's overkill. But 3-4 more would be nice and just dedicate them to the Halo 3 forum.

Not to call any ninjas out, but it might be time to clean house. There are quite a few ninjas who barely moderate, if at all. If they're busy or have moved on, that's fine, but then shouldn't they step down and let others who would be able to dedicate more time to do the job?

A tosser is the same as a wanker. To toss oneself off is to fondle the trouser weasel.

I think you should STFU... er, no, not really. Just give it time. The Halo 3 forum will never be a good forum, the only way to discuss about the game is finding an active group.

I don't think you're placing enough blame on older members. I'm on my 3rd account (been here since '04 - had permission to create new accounts) so don't try to be like "oh em gee you are an '07 nub". True Underdog was my previous account.

Plenty of old members act like they're better than newer members, which in turn, makes the new members flame and post stupid things.

Example: A "regular" posts "OLD" or some other "witty" response to a thread. Well, Jonny New-Forumgoer reads this and thinks it's the norm. They tend to emulate what "regulars" do.

The Flood hasn't changed

Ever.

It's been the same place under a different perspective giving it the appearance of change.

Groups... They should be advertised more around the site. Not by members in their posts but throughout bungie.net. Publicity is good for them. I don't mean this group or that group, I mean groups in general, so people know they exist.

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

I go to the H3 forums pretty regularally. I'd like to think that I contribute worthwhile posts amongst the spam. I have noticed lately there is more spam and flame than usual, and also at the same time less moderation. Perhaps the added spam and flame is because of the lack of moderation. But either way I would say it's worse than what it was before Halo 3 came out. Just recently there have been anti-jewish posts. It's getting pretty bad.

I think it could use some organization (sub-forums?) and more moderators.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

Well for me when I get on sometimes the Halo 3 forum is full of stuff that needs my attention. It takes a bit of time to sort it all out because a thread has been open for quite a while and there are many people that need some attention. A good thing that helps tremendously is when people notify us of an unruly member or thread that needs attention. Especially when they link us to it. I guess I will have to put my MSN back into my sig so people can reach me there too. Just remember that I might not be in a chatty mood. Just state what the problem is and shoot me the link.

Yeah, I know The Flood isn't changing, I guess a better word would have been that the baton is being passed.

I agree. Sure there's the community spotlight and ever rotating groups of the day, but ever since the new forum layout with our sigs hidden, it's not as easy to recruit and see what groups other members are in.

I don't know what the solution is, maybe instead of the morgue that is The Classified's, have an interactive group forum.

Even though the forums aren't as active as it was before Halo 3, the Halo 3 forum still maintains a spam forum. I recommend that people should use the search feature because without using it, you're just saying a bunch ofinfo someone said a week ago or a month ago before you. Also, if the original thread wasn't very active, why would we really need another? That just seems pointless and irrelevant.

Another interesting rumor that is going around the forums, and in private groups right now is something that many members have been talking about.

There is a lack of moderating(visible) right now in many forums. At this same time, many members have been asking for either more mods, or at least, more active ones. This is more interesting with Ghandi 2 hanging up his banhammer, not because he quit, but the issue it causes. Ghandi 2, evilcam, Recon, Pezza, and Achronos are the most active moderators, which, on a normal day is a pretty good amount of activity. However, Ghandi is no longer there.

Think about this, there are fewer mods are available, a mod needs to be replaced, moderators are less active when they are on(in debate over the issue perhaps), and members are calling for more moderators.

If you haven't been able to piece together the rumor yet, it is that there could be a few new moderators that are going to be inducted, and perhaps some removed.

God, I feel like I am writing a gossip column. *tries to clean self* IT WON'T COME OFF!!!

Nice, Escher eh? Can't belive I never noticed that.

OT: I think that most of the moderators do a fantastic job of fielding these forums. It can be an unruly place, and keeping a temper, while remembering diplomacy can be difficult in a large group. I wouldn't want to try it across the entire forums. These guys have a lot of patience and diligence that should be recognized.
