Halo 1 was and is the only real halo. Every strong weapon was only as good as you were. The weaker/situational weapons kept it balanced for the less skilled. I hate it when people say that the pistol was overpowered. It gets outmatched by practically anything because it gave you a chance and not this automatic 3 hit kill. Sure I get the TSK almost every time, but good players with the sniper will nail me in the head before I can land the second shot. Why do people hate on the pistol for being a decent weapon, while the competent sniper owns it in nearly all situations? Of course without the massive auto-aim, the elite were few and far between. The pistol was almost always my backup weapon, because for me the sniper kills at any range in 1 hit. The pistol still needed to be there, because it gave you a chance to hold your own in most situations.
Halo 2 was not Halo, it was entirely different. You spawn with a totally useless trash weapon, and get mowed down by duelers and heavies within seconds of your respawn. Include the massive auto-aim, and everyone's skill level becomes redundant. Practically all the events in any match are based on the initial race for the good weapons/vehicles. Why did they add territories as a gametype, if the rocket is a territory in slayer? The sword is a camper's dream with its almost unavoidable lunge and infinite ammo. The sniper is a mockery of what it used to be, as the auto-aim allows for no skill swipe sniping. Halo 2 was based largely on the opening sprint and largely on teamwork in team based games.
Halo 3 is getting closer to Halo, but retains some of Halo 2's flaws. The auto-aim is still very high for an FPS, but bearable. The spawn with an AR, while everyone else has a more specialized weapon is almost as bad as SMG spawns. Like H1, everything is much more balanced. However with more than twice the auto-aim that halo 1 had, battles seem like the victor is decided by the weapon they carry rather than their ability to use the weapon. This element reminds me of Halo 2, and is very negative. Due to the weapon balances, any weapon can beat any other weapon. This removes the incentive to really go for anything. There needs to be a need to go and get the sniper, which I just don't see as often. If H3 has no rush, and H2 had all rush... Halo 1 had a happy medium.
There, I compared the three. H1>H3>H2
