With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

I wonder how cool it'll be playng with Linda, Fred, and Will... and possibly Kelly... Linda's sniper skills will come in handy. Ten bucks says there'll be a cutscene where the Master Chief is face to face with a foe that he can't defeat, and then a sniper bullet-trail goes through the head of the foe, and Linda chimes in and says something like, "thought you could use a hand."

Will should gain his sense of humor back (it said he lost it in First Strike during his years as a soldier).... nothing like a funny-man to add some comic relief (not that Halo really needs any, I'm just sayin').

I also wonder if the other Spartans will remain faceless like the Chief should (not showing thier faces... although it'd be interesting, it'd be better if the Chief's face is always hidden like at the end of Halo 1)...

Anyone else share this curiosity (that may be an incredibly dumb question, sorry if it is... I'm bored).

No he wasnt he is still alive. when they went in the command and control thing and destroyed it he was helping. john, fred, grace, will, linda are the last ones but kelly is missing. you should know that if you read the book.

Uhhh, no. Anton and Li were roasted. Will, Grace, Linda (she wasn't there at the time... still in sick bay), Fred, and Kelly (also may not have been there,.... sick bay as well, I think), and The good ole Master Chief survived. Grace died on the Uneven Elephant, and Will, Fred, John, and Linda all make it to Halo 2's timeline. Presumeably Kelly as well, but we don't know for sure.

He obviously read the book, but got the names confused.. which is completely understandable given that the names of the Spartans aren't exactly THAT memorable.

Twelve Large ²

An army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep.

I dare ya to say that to the Master Chief!

Question, why do people type in "Spoiler: something here" for there posts when they aren't giving away a spoiler but are just speculating about something. It would only be a spoiler if you knew FACTS about something that wasn't revealed yet. And even then I would only deam it a spoiler if it was stating an important part of the storyline, especially a later point in time in Halo 2, or maybe even if it's revealing a special "new" addition to gameplay that is meant to be kept secret until you play the game. I can maybe see people typing "Spoiler" if their topic is talking directly about something from the books, but I imagine that most people who haven't read them already either aren't going to read them anyway or aren't going to care about spoilers. I think though that if you are going to type in spoilers regarding a book then put next to it what book you're refferencing, that way people who maybe only read one book and are going to read the next one soon and don't want any spoilers for the one they're about to read will know whether you're talking about something they've already read or not. Otherwise please stop posting "spoiler" in the subjects unless you're Bungie because everyone's speculations about what could be are not spoilers.

Hey don't forget the other Spartans that weren't even called back to reach for the special mission. They could be still out there. But probably dead as the reason they couldn't come back was because they were in heavy fighting.

guys, lets face it, the spartans' names are lame. If anything, I hope the names were chosen to emphasize that they are facless soldiers.

oh, and as far as spoilers go, stop being so -blam!-. It's better safe than sorry.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Those Spartans couldn't be called back for training in the improved Mark V Mjolnir. They were probably on their way to Reach at the time, which was days before the attack. The infiltration mission for the Spartans was going to use all of the Spartans to further their chances of success (which were already high). They probably got back just before the attack on Reach, and I think there were 30 Spartans (maybe 29 or 31) on board the Pillar of Autumn before the attack happened. Thats the number of Spartans that made it through the augmentation program (possibly minus 1 or 2... my info on the Fall of Reach is a little sketchy... I think 2 died in missions before the Sigma Octanus mission, correct me if I'm wrong.) When Fred was falling through the sky after baling out of the Pelican en route to Reach, he saw 26 signals on his HUD when he told them to display their possitions in the sky. Including him, this makes 27, and add the 3 that were on Gamma Station (James, Linda, and our good friend John), and that makes 30. If 3 were away from Reach, the total at that time would've been 33... I'm pretty sure that less than 33 Spartans made it through the Augmentation procedure while still having the ability to function as a soldier (however, there were at least 3 other Spartans that DID survive, but could no longer function as soldiers... 2 of the 3 were named Fhajad and Rene).

Again, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that my math and memory (even if its a little shaky) cancels out the possibility of 3 more surviving Spartans for Halo 2.

... sorry to disappoint you.

they are lame because they are all generic and cookie cutter, which makes them unmemorable - especially with the lack of nicknames

you want to see how memorable characters are named in sci fi - read anything by orson scott card

ender
bean
valentine
petra
sister carlotta
graff
crazy tom
bonzo
etc

just off the top of my head, and that's only Ender's Game - we can go into his other works as well, if you'd like

I remember those names because there was more effort put into character development - in making the characters distinct and giving them personality, nicknames, last names, etc.

what's worse is that all the name are of a very US orgin, so it seems like all of the main spartans are cut from the same mold.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

And the Spartans' last names are probably classified, so they wouldn't be able to try to find their real parents after a number of years. I bet the Spartans have forgotten their last names. Being called by number classifications only (and first names amongst themselves and a few others) starting at a very young age, it probably didn't take long for it to slip from their memories. This was probably the purpose of number classification... indirectly forced memory loss.

right, but no nicknames either. more importantly, there just wasnt' enough effort put into differentiating the spartans from one another. I feel like I know John and Cortana pretty well, and there's a comfort level with Fred and Kelly, but the rest of the spartans are fairly interchangable save for their distinct skills.

Nylund is a pretty good writer, but there's plenty of room for growth in his character development (I have these same issues with his non Halo works as well)

Further, while I feel Nylunds novels were more rewarding than Dietz's The Flood, Dietz did a better job of character development - most notably with Yayap.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Generic last names were probably part of the selection procedure, so that people wouldn't remember them well after a while.

As for wierd names, read the Dune books by Frank Herbert:

Scytale
Teg
Shai-Hulud
Farok
Stilgar
Leto
Tylwyff Waff (now THERE's an interesting name)
Sheeana
Siona
Chani
Feyd Rautha
Dama

.... need I say more?

I already made a topic like this...

it would be awesome if more spartans were in Halo 2 (and i have reasons to believe their will be) Linda would be awesome!

exactly, Shai Hulud. Dune is a fantastic novel and VERY memorable and much of that has to do with the characters. I think Bungie, themselves, did a fine job with showing personality in Halo and I'm looking forward to more of that in Halo. I and don't want to seem like I'm not giving Nylund some credit as well, because I was really able to connect with Captian Keys, Sargent Johnson, etc through his work.

Maybe when the spec ops elites with plasma swords surround the MC, Linda pops off a few head shots in. Not that the MC couldn't handle all of those elites. =P

I seriously don't think there will be other Spartans fighting along side you in Halo 2. There may be a cutscene or something on them but I don't think they will be involved for the battle for Earth. They're probably on an away mission or something and you may join up with them later. But even that is probably not going to happen.

I for one hope that you are the only spartan in Halo 2.
