What the heck kind of theories are these? At the end of the game, the portal from the Ark to Earth closes, with Master Chief on the Ark Side. Theres no time travel, no different universes. Stop trying to connect to games from completly different years and systems. Just wait and see what Bungie has in store for John 117. Speculation is fine, but riduclous speculation is just stupid and wrong, and wastes space.

Relax, I'd rather not piss this thing off...

Now while I haven't played all of the Marathon games (Downloaded that one from Xbox live, I'm guessing it's not the first one) this does sound like a plausible theory. A very well presented argument.

Only picked up two minor issues (now I'll probably sound picky but bear with me)

First of all, the comparison between IRIS footage and the concept art of a Compiler. The footage is a photo of a mountain, more specifically a rock outcropping and surrounding trees, similar to those found in the mountains of Australia's Great Dividing Range.

And then there's the issue of the planet featured in the Legendary ending. A freeze frame taken in the last second or two before the star-rise shows a massive forerunner symbol on the planet's surface. This particualr symbol is repeated throughout the Halo Trilogy, and is present on/in the Bestiarium booklet encluded with the Halo 3 collectors and Legendary editions. I may be wrong but I seem to recall that the symbol was somehow related to Reclamation. This leads me to believe that the planet was, or is inhabited by the forerunner.

Still, your evidence is substantial. It will be interesting to see what Bungie throws our way.

This theory is all well and good, but what about the people who've never played the older Marathon games? We're gonna be in a spot of bother.

I refuse to accept that the main character of the Halo universe is capable of traveling into the Marathon universe. As long as MC is alive, there is a story to tell...in the Halo universe. The next game continuing the MC story is going to be 4th chronologically in the Halo story, not the Marathon story.

-edit-

And another thing, if bungie intended to run the halo trilogy into the marathon trilogy, why the hell wouldn't they just use the Marathon names for everything?

-edit 2-

Also, what defines the Halo universe and the marathon universe? Is it time or location?

Fair enough, there are Marathon symbols on many Forerunner artifacts. I haven't played any Marathon, but would it be possible for the Forerunners to play a role in the game?

The game could be called Halo: Marathon. A tad unimaginative, but this is the company that chose the names Halo 2 and 3 for the most succesful games in xbox history.

I like what he said.

Putting Master Chief in another universe? It doesn't add up, plus we don't know what was the nature of the Portal to the Ark. Was it an advance Slipspace portal? or was it a different time and space altering technology? We might never know.

I don't think universe travel is possible in Halo. Even with all the forerunner relics mentioned and used, none of them had dimensional displacement capabilities, only Slipspace.
Even Onyx, the Shield Installation was a Slipspace Bubble, nothing more. There is nothing I can think of that indicates the Forerunners had any knowledge of inter-dimensional/inter-universal capabilities.

I just think the conclusion of the theory is implausible. However the planet in the Legendary Cutscene and the Server 2 "Infestation" picture, I believe are the same planets. But its not possible for it to be Mars or ANYwhere in Sol. Simply because of the Seven Star nebula of which I forget the name, is too close. My feeling is that this is a location, beyond the Milky Way's rim and after the location of the Ark.

Those are my thoughts for today.

I dunno. My biggest beef with the Halo leads into Marathon trilogy is saying that the Halo stories are done, because they already have been told in the Marathon universe. Plus Microsoft owns the rights to the Halo franchise, and seeing how the halo franchise has been the most successful franchise for the xbox, they are going to want to use that success with future games for future consoles.

A rebuttal to the symbols: Every company has their special marks and styles. Every toyota has a toyota symbol on it, whether it be a semi truck or a prius, which are 2 very different things. Common symbols does not denote a common storyline.

  • 02.09.2009 12:45 AM PDT

Worry not. Microsoft know Halo is easy money, they will churn out games, hopefully good ones, for years. It is unknown, however, what Bungie will do.

WTF that thing that mc floats towards in the legendary ending was onyx.
read the book Halo: The ghosts of onyx
or do u want me to tell u what it really is?

Actually, the previous few posters (and likely a lot of other previous posters) make a good point. The appearance of Marathon symbols in Halo does not have to mean any continuation, especially seeing as that one particular marathon symbol (the two circles, vertical line one) is seen through 3 separate factions in the Halo universe. The covenant have it (it appears inside the Shadow if Intent) the forerunner have it (the control room of installation 04 resembles it) and Humans have it (Cpt Keyes' nametag, and the Pillar of Autumn have it.) I reckon it's just bungie's way of saying "we made this game"

Strike Force summed it up nicely by comparing the symbol to the Toyota mark. All Toyatas have it because it's a brand icon.

Are you an invalid? Oynx was destroyed, all that remains is the micro dyson sphere, which is tiny. The planet shown at the end was huge. Go figure Einstein.

points for trying dude, but you're going to need more evidence than that. For one, you've read the book, you KNOW that the surface of Onyx exploded, leaving a massive shell of Sentinels. Secondly, i doubt that a perfectly tesselating pattern of triangles would have the very non-tesselating shape of the forerunner symbol for Reclaimer in it. However, having said that, it would make good sense for the Onyx sentinel shell to somehow form the symbol, as Onyx was a shield world, and the Symbol was designed to alert the Reclaimers to it's presence. I kinda hope it IS Onyx, that way we can find out what the hell happened to Halsey, Mendez and the Spartans...

some nob face in my class thinks the Killzone storyline is better than halo

haha, don't worry penut44, I wasn't disagreeing with you. There's actually a lot of people on this thread who lean towards our side of the fence. There was a guy on the previous page who mentions that the planet was 'shiny,' which could be explained by bazillions of metal sentinels reflecting light.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that the planet IS Onyx. Even if it isn't, it is at least a world the Forerunner once (or maybe still do) inhabit. This will make for some interesting outcomes in either case. If it's onyx, we find out what happened to the others. If it's a forerunner world, we either find out more about them from ruins, or we find THEM (or by extension, our ancestors {that's right, i said ancestors, who want's to start a Forerunner-Human lineage debate?!?!})

tried that, didn't help me. I think though it might have been because I was thinking more about how much it reminded me of a happy medium between doom2 and duke nukem3D. Most of the time, I was soo freakin lost...

I got to the point where I said to myself "you know what? I'm just going to go with what Bungie themselves said about how the story lines are not related"

Yeah, I just decided I don't like it. The doors look like walls, and I got pwned by the aliens with the Star wars esque staffs.
