MC is dead. Cortana has kept his body alive using nebula-linked neurons which control his heart and brain circulation. The marathon nebula was a result of his power-malfunction, after visiting many planets, your body would be filled with strange energies. So, basically, MC is Cortana, floating through the nebula.

It is, actually. The marathon is a psychic creation of Cortana as she becomes the entity.

At the end of Halo 3, you see MC floating in space. Look closely into his helmet. Then, on the mission "Cortana", listen to Cortana and Gravemind. Also, Cortana, it turns out, is a psychological thing, not an AI.

WOW. Just wow. I do beleive that. Pretty awesome how you incorporated scientifics into a video game. nice job.

We believe that the universe is unbounded: this is not the same as infinite: the 2-D surface of a sphere, wrapped around a 3rd dimension, has a finite size, but has no end. If you start off in a given direction on the surface of a sphere, you could return to your start point without having to turn around -- you simply go all the way around. But wouldn't that mean the universe has an escape velocity like the earth?

firstly, he clinically is living, sorry realalternity

secondly! bungie has CLEARLY stated that halo and marathon are in seperate universes, which makes a theory of alternate universes plausible, apart from the loopholes,

and thirdly, Cortana was based after Dr.Catherine Halsey, head of the Spartan-II projects teenage form, which makes cortana an AI, the reason for the head communication due to a chip implanted via the helmet to access the helmets neural interface

Realalternity, please, before assumptions are made, at least take the time to read the facts, no offense.

  • 05.29.2009 7:57 PM PDT

Thinking about you theory this can lead to a new Marathon/ Halo game and when Bungie separated from Microsoft they said Marathon is still Bungie property. If they ever do it they should end the game by Master chief returning to the Halo Universe.

I don't understand what you mean. Cortana is an Artificial Intelligence and always will be. I think that what you might be referring to is the hypothetical "metastability" that is theorized to exist as a fourth stage of AI rampancy, in which an AI gains true consciousness and becomes a sentient "person", which I personally think is the case. It would explain her unusual amount of emotion at the end of the game. Plus, since it's the last stage of rampancy, and rampancy is what causes an AI's death, it would be the easiest way to keep Cortana around beyond the usual seven-year lifespan that smart AI have.

But regardless, she is still a construction of code. In this case, she's just a construction of code that has naturally evolved.

For those of you who have played Microsoft's Fable 2, you know that Master Chief appears there somewhere in time. This is obviously where he went.

Anybody consider that it's going so slowly because we are all trying to access it and it's not even supposed to be public yet?

Also, if that is the case, it means it's also slowing down for the employee...he's probably going to just get up and go to Outback for a nice Bloomin Onion and we're gonna all be left sitting here wondering what the heck just happened to our mystery man

Oh, lulz.

Anyways, the OP's theory is very plausible to me.

So I signed it, lost my soul, and got 4 quarters. I have never regretted this decision.

A good theory but i really don't think bungie would cross two different games series, my own theory stays within the halo universe my theory is that the spirit of fire phoenix class ship from halo wars finds the back half of forward into dawn and master chief and cortana it would fit in quite well with the story in my opinion and basically spirit of fire has been classified as mia since it never returned back to harvest or earth to report. They are as of currently making there way to earth because of the loss of there slip space drive it will take many years to reach earth i think spirit of fire finds the dawn on there way back to earth. To prove my theory the legendary ending of halo wars has an audio sequence that says "captain wake up something has happened" at that exact moment in the time line the spirit of fire finds the dawn and Serena awakes the crew from hyper sleep. To further prove my theory at the legendary ending cortana say ill drop a beacon but it might take years for someone to find us . That is my theory

I cant believe that im the only one that thinks that halo wars plays a more significant role in the halo story than just a lost segment of the second battle of harvest.

BATTLEMECH3 O03 i like your theory but one problem Serena wakes up the crew right after they go into hyper sleep and it would mean that MC has gone back in time to their point and everyone on earth says he has died. but good theory.

The Snow Leopard's wisdom includes: Understanding one's shadow-side; trusting one's inner-self; agility; strength; the ability to stalk; understanding the power of silence.

You are the most correct person ever to predict the future of the Halo storyline, or rather, Halo/Marathon storyline! Now I have someone to quote when I argue with the Halo fans I know about the future.

First of all, mars is inside the milky way galaxy.
Master chief, at the end of halo 3 is not.
Master chief is in a ship that is traveling at less than the speed of light.
The distance from anywhere outside the galaxy to mars would be several thousand light years.( I do apologise for not having an exact number, but I'm fairly sure I am correct.)
A light year is a measurement of distance, which basically means how much distance light would travel in a year.
Now if we go back to the point where I mention that Master Chief's ship is not traveling as fast as light, and we add to that the fact that there are only two hundred years between halo and marathon, it is safe to assume, master chief would not be able to get there in time, even if the ship was able to maintain power for that two hundred years and was traveling at precise co-ordinates to mars.

Also remember that that thermal image was not just randomly put down by Bungie employees, it was part of the halo canon in which the forerunners were gathering data, and I think this was just to add depth to the idea that they were scanning the planets for life to put on the ark.
If this thermal was in fact put down deliberately in order to give us a clue about a marathon tie in, that would suggest that going into an alternate universe was planned, but, if you remember, the collapse of the portal and the failed lighting of a halo was certainly not part of their plan.
Also consider that master chief was heading into orbit around a planet which was quite clearly not mars, and I say this because the Mars I remember had other planets nearby and was not covered in gunmetal gray Forerunner symbols

I also would like to know why this image in the Iris would have anything to do with the legendary ending anyway, I may have missed this part out whilst reading the theory, but I honestly can't see a connection.

In case no one responded to this, the thermal image relates to the Legendary Ending because the thermal reading shows a distortion anomaly in the exact location in which the light emanates from metallic planetoid at the end of the Legendary Ending. Some argue that they're unrelated, but given that every piece of content we got from those IRIS Servers had a purpose (and as you said, are canonical), this is the only relationship we've come up with, and I think it probably holds some weight. People fixated on it because it was a Mars thermal image, and that's how they drew the lines between the two.

Cortana was made based off of Dr. Catherine(i think thats how you spell it) Halsey. Cortana is even supposed to look like her when she was younger....... Im sorry where i forgot where i herd that. I think its mentioned in the book series somewhere.
