When the dust settles, you will learn what true terror is.
I've heard this theory and it's evidence so many times, but Bungie has stated on NUMEROUS occasions that while there are a lot of easter eggs and nods to Marathon in the Halo games, the two are totally separate.
I don't have the time to type out my full theory, but think about this. We know that the Forward Unto Dawn made it INTO the portal right? If it hadn't, then Halo's blast would have killed the Chief. We know that the FRONT HALF of the ship made it OUT of the portal on the other side, with the Arbiter. What we don't know is what happened to the BACK HALF of the ship. Here is where the speculation begins.
Scenario 1: As it has been stated in the books, when a slipspace drive fails the ship *typically* drops back into normal space, meaning the Chief is somewhere between The Ark and Earth. Not a bad theory at all, but we have to keep in mind that that is what happens when a human slipspace drive fails. This leads us to...
Scenario 2: Since the portal was opened and maintained by forerunner technology, it's entirely possible that the default behavior of a ship when the portal fails has been programmed into the system. This leads to two sub-theories.
sub-theory A: The back half of the ship was redirected to a specific location that was predetermined by the portal system. This could mean any number of things, and is supported by the fact that there is an (obviously) forerunner structure which the back half of the Dawn is drifting towards.
sub-theory B: Rather than dropping out of slipspace, forerunner portal technology simply leaves the ship IN slipspace. If you recall, the microdyson sphere that the other SPARTANs and Dr. Halsey are in are held inside of a "slipspace bubble". This tells us that forerunner tech allows for structures (and presumably ships) to be built and kept in slipspace. This would, in and of itself, be cause for a wide range of theories (example: OMG teh 4runars R still 4l1v3 hidin n slipspace!!1!!1!one!!11), but the theory I'm sticking to is this: The Chief is now trapped in Slipspace, drifting towards a forerunner structure held there. Whether the structure is the microdyson sphere that Halsey and Co. are in, or another structure altogether remains to be seen.
Now I'm off to probably never see this thread again. Have fun thinking these things over.
