A government should fear it's people not the other way round.

Marathon was a bit before my time and the one time I tried to play it I only had one of the later games so the timeline never made much sense. Tying the two series together would be an interesting idea though. To tell you the truth until recently I was more of a Nintendo guy so I missed some of bungies older games. I'll have to dig out one of my old Mac computers and play marathon now.

When the dust settles, you will learn what true terror is.

I've heard this theory and it's evidence so many times, but Bungie has stated on NUMEROUS occasions that while there are a lot of easter eggs and nods to Marathon in the Halo games, the two are totally separate.

I don't have the time to type out my full theory, but think about this. We know that the Forward Unto Dawn made it INTO the portal right? If it hadn't, then Halo's blast would have killed the Chief. We know that the FRONT HALF of the ship made it OUT of the portal on the other side, with the Arbiter. What we don't know is what happened to the BACK HALF of the ship. Here is where the speculation begins.

Scenario 1: As it has been stated in the books, when a slipspace drive fails the ship *typically* drops back into normal space, meaning the Chief is somewhere between The Ark and Earth. Not a bad theory at all, but we have to keep in mind that that is what happens when a human slipspace drive fails. This leads us to...

Scenario 2: Since the portal was opened and maintained by forerunner technology, it's entirely possible that the default behavior of a ship when the portal fails has been programmed into the system. This leads to two sub-theories.

sub-theory A: The back half of the ship was redirected to a specific location that was predetermined by the portal system. This could mean any number of things, and is supported by the fact that there is an (obviously) forerunner structure which the back half of the Dawn is drifting towards.

sub-theory B: Rather than dropping out of slipspace, forerunner portal technology simply leaves the ship IN slipspace. If you recall, the microdyson sphere that the other SPARTANs and Dr. Halsey are in are held inside of a "slipspace bubble". This tells us that forerunner tech allows for structures (and presumably ships) to be built and kept in slipspace. This would, in and of itself, be cause for a wide range of theories (example: OMG teh 4runars R still 4l1v3 hidin n slipspace!!1!!1!one!!11), but the theory I'm sticking to is this: The Chief is now trapped in Slipspace, drifting towards a forerunner structure held there. Whether the structure is the microdyson sphere that Halsey and Co. are in, or another structure altogether remains to be seen.

Now I'm off to probably never see this thread again. Have fun thinking these things over.

Respect My Authoritay!

I agree with General Khazard, im not saying that phearmaker's theory is bad it has alot of evidence. but I agree that the cheif is in splitspace drifting towards a 4runner structure. the only way we'll ever no for sure is if bungie tells us either by posting it or (dare i say it) Halo 4!

BLARG! HONK!

Bungie denies most claims that Halo and Marathon are linked in any way.
Although there are connections and similarities between the games, and there are many marathon symbols hidden throughout the Halo games.
Yes, I'm aware there's "proof" that the protagonist in both the games is the same person.
Yes, I'm aware there's a marathon symbol in every other cutscene, on the security helmet, and on most maps in campaign and multiplayer.
I personally believe Bungie put those in the game for nostalgic and aesthetic purposes, not because it's the same person.

Hi

DON'T YELL AT ME.

Given a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

Haven't ever played Marathon, and thusly don't know enough to back the "Marathon" theory or bash it.
I skipped to the end of the thread, so I don't know if this point has been made or not, but the "200 Years Later" theory doesn't make sense to me, because AI's have a projected operational life cycle of approximately 7 years, as stated in the Halo novels. The only way Cortana could reach 7 years is if she put herself in some state of suspended animation, because all the information she absorbed on the first Halo, and the trials and tribulations she endured through the "First Strike" novel did plenty to tax her lifespan.

I should re-state though, I don't know much beyond what is actually shown in the game, and what is given to us in the novels. I'm personally in favor of the "Onyx" theory, being that the planet that the back half of the Further Unto Dawn (I think that was it) drifts towards is the planet Onyx, where Dr. Halsey and several Spartans are trapped inside in some kind of Slipspace bubble.

No evidence to support this other than the novels and the gameplay.

and plus TcreavisAwesome, they werent trying to kill the flood, the were destroying the ark and blowing up the remains of the first halo (actuelly installation 05 i think) with the first found halo itself. as in, activating the ring that only harms sentient life. and that would starve the flood in that sector of the universe and blah blah blah because they were spreading in that part and thats were all the halo's in the halo series are linked. (Nice script writers) :) actuelly...that is technicly trying to kill the flood...so...nevermind... :/

Some can come away from reading "War and Peace" thinking it a simple adventure story, while others can read the ingredients on a gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.

This theory makes no sense at all. Bungie stated theres no relation (story wise) bettween marathon and halo. Hardly scintific or extensive in any way. And thats not where the chief is smrt. He wen't through the portal remember? Now if you bilieve he didn't and just missed it theres the fact he would have been insinerated. Plus cortana says you did go through. That cloud in the background could be 1 of billions in our galaxy, a random piece of debri from a star gone super nova..... *stops unexpectedly*

wow had idea. O and read this, much more evidence and support.

Spartans don't DIE...They go to Hell & Regroup !!!

The Chief landed in Fable 2. He went thru a time portal & crash landed in Albion.

Long ago, when Albion was still undewr rule of the Old Kingdom, a rift in space opened a portal between deminensions. Through the rift stepped a warrior of immense power, clad in green armor & carrying a striking crystal sword. Though he never revealed his real name he was known as Hal.

There know you know what happen to the chief.

Life every day like it's your last.

Amazing theory, plausible indeed. Could leave the door open to a new Marathon game.

THATS WHY THERE NO
WOULD BE HALO 4 IT WILL BE MARATHON AGAIN

  • 08.13.2009 4:55 PM PDT

hate to burst your bubble but master chief didnt wind up in the marathon universe, and he isnt near mars.

Reason for not being in Marathon
if chief did wind up in the marathon universe then bungie would have done something to restore interest in Marathon. Adding a game to the xbox live arcade wouldnt get enough people intrested. They would probably want to revamp the marathon series or make a new game altogether.

secondly chief couldnt be near mars because mars is near Earth. he planet chief and the arbiter were on is nowhere near Earth. If they were to somehow get to mars they would have had to have been near Earth's region of the Milky Way Galaxy. Which they weren't. And i dont think it would have taken a whole five seconds for master chief to float from the distant reaches of space to mars.

You also say that chief transported to the marathon universe, even though you stated chief's universe already has marathon technology. so, he cant be in the marathon universe becaue his universe IS going to become the marathon universe. And let's face it bungie's creative team well, isnt that...creative.

So Halo 4 is probably going to revolve around chief being found a long time into the future only to find out that all of the people he has come to know have died with the possible exception of an elderly arbiter. There will be some kind of war that has broken out. And there will be a new brand of super solider only they'll be on the "bad guy's team" helping some new evil space dictator take over the galaxy. It will be up to Master Chief, Cortanna, and possibly an aging arbiter to help a ragtag army that is outnumbered composed of elites, some alien species, and humans to try to topple the new threat to the galaxy
