Not only has Bungie outright confirmed the Halo series and Marathon series take place in completely unrelated universes, it's also just as likely they weill never cross pollinate.
As a huge fan of Marathon, I have several questions; have you ever played the entire trilogy?
First off, Marathon left Sol in 2472, finally arriving at Tau Ceti in 2773. By 2552 (in the Hlo universe) The UNSC had gained control of Tau Ceti from the Covenant. Along with that, in Marathon, Tau Ceti was the first planet colonized by humans, not so in Halo, it was just one of many, but not the first.
Secondly, the Pfhor are the first aliens humanity ever encountered in Marathon, on 2794, while we know of seven from Halo.
What exactly is your source for this information? That Bungie used a real photo of a real planet during the Iris campaign, I see no relation, no recognizable features to relate it to Mars.
Nor is there any sense of humanity, or colonization by humanity, seen at the legendary ending, Cortana's words only echo this.
But, really, perhaps you should play through the Marathon trilogy, wonderful game, and you can get it free, before you post nonsense.
And at what point does Master Chief get involved in Marathon, I mean, have you played Infinity, or even Durandal, it just wouldn't work.
