awsome theory! also bungie stated that halo and marathon were in seperate universes: a.k.a PARALELL UNIVERSES! they said that to kinda throw people off of the trail a bit. me and some friends think that since bungie are working with activision and not microsoft now, (meaning no more halo :'(! ) we think they may perhaps re-make marathon for newer consoles (or maybe pc) with a stronger connection to halo 3's ending and marathon 1's beggining, including links from each storyline to the other...
P.S: Script from terminal 7 Level: Halo, clearly states on the last line of the last paragraph "But I want something far different from you, Reclaimer. (Talking of Master chief)

Atonement.

And so here at the end of my life, I do once again betray a former master. The path ahead is fraught with peril. But I will do all I can to keep it stable - keep you safe. I'm not so foolish to think this will absolve me of my sins. One life hardly balances billions.

But I would have my masters know that I have changed.

And you shall be my example."

Not exactly sure what this means but i think its saying that Chief will follow the forunners example and he will do this during the marathon trilogy...

P.S.S if im wrong in anyway please dont rip my head off! D:

*Holds breath and tries not to rip head off.*

When they say different "universes", they mean different game universes. As in seperate canon and lineage, not "parallel" universes. Things in Halo do not work that way.

Bungie even stated about 2 years ago that Halo and Marathon will never collide. Also, this scenario is impossible because Bungie own the Marathon IP but don't have the Halo IP, Microsoft do not own the Marathon IP but own the Halo IP - see where this is going?

*

My theory is that it's a planet the Forerunners fled to once they reseeded the galaxy of life in the aftermath of the Halo's firing.

Anyone who thinks the Forerunners all died are wrong. They had loads of Shield Worlds - which most of them made it to - and after the Flood was dormant, the galaxy safe, they left their Shield Worlds and reseeded the lives they'd catalogued over the final years of the Forerunner-Flood war.

They then passed down their Mantle to humanity (making them Reclaimers and giving them the ability to use their technology) and exiled themselves from the galaxy for their failure to protect and uphold the Mantle - they sought a peaceful place to co-exist and follow in the wake of the Precursors.

Further proof:

You don't know the contortions I had to go through to follow you here, Reclaimer. I know what you're here for. What position do I take? Will I follow one betrayal with another?

You're going to say I'm making a habit of turning on my masters.

But the one that destroyed me long ago, in the upper atmosphere of a world far distant from here, was an implement far cruder than I. My weakness was capacity - unintentional though it was! - to choose the Flood. A mistake my makers would not soon forgive.

But I want something far different from you, Reclaimer.

Atonement.

And so here at the end of my life, I do once again betray a former master. The path ahead is fraught with peril. But I will do all I can to keep it stable - keep you safe. I'm not so foolish to think this will absolve me of my sins. One life hardly balances billions.

But I would have my masters know that I have changed.

And you shall be my example.
~ 032 Mendicant Bias, Terminal 7 on Legendary.

The bolded parts are the important bits. Bias betrayed the Forerunners during the Forerunner-Flood war, he joined with the Gravemind and went rampant. During the 100,000 years of living on the Dreadnaught, he became meta-stable (the stage where an AI is a true person) and wanted to prove to the Forerunners he has become good again.

He tells the Chief, "and you shall be my example". A previous Terminal states that he infiltrated the Ark's slipspace portal and has control over the destinations. Putting 2 and 2 together leads me to believe he's sending John (a Reclaimer) to where the Forerunners currently reside in order to prove that he's changed.

Mendicant Bias just changed the slipspace portal at the last second, weither Master Chief went back in time or not, thats your choice, all that is REALY know for sure about the ending is 3 things.

1: Mendicant Bias is the reason master chief went to the "legendary planet"

2: Master Chief is in a nebula with a blue star.

3. The planet is of Forerunner orgin

this is, in my oppinion, the location of the legendary planet...

http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Iris_Nebula

2 reasons to support this...

1: There was an ARG for Halo 3 called "Iris"

2: The Iris nebula has a blue star

Nope he's still alive and rolling. Although it's true you seldom hear of him these days.

1) No, it's not. Earth was a planet the Forerunners never knew about until the very end of their war with the Flood because it was beyond their Maginot Sphere. The Librarian trapped herself on it and unwittingly discovered humanity.

2) The Forerunners are not humans. The Forerunners discovered humans, the Librarian saw them as a special race (hinting they're related to the Precursors) and the Forerunners passed their Mantle down to humanity - making them Reclaimers.

So no, you're wrong.

Master Chief and Cortana are somewhere. It was supposed to end like that so the story could live on. IN YOU. Whatever you think the story is, then thats the story to you. Make it up, write it, whatever. Because at the moment, whatever happens to Master Chief and Cortana is up to you.

Let it be Marathon. Let it be forerunner. Let it be Onyx. Let it be the glassed reminance of Reach if you want. Make it up. Make into a Machinima. I'm sure Bungie, and the community would like to see your side of the story. GET YOUR THOUGHTS OUT THERE. GO, GO, GO!!!

No. Before the Didact fired the Rings, the remaining Forerunners retreated behind the Shield Worlds and waited out the storm.

Once the Flood was dormant, they left the Shield Worlds; reseeded the galaxy of the lives consumed by Halo's firing; passed down their Mantle to humanity (making them Reclaimers), and exiled themselves from the Milky Way (seeking a quiet place to co-exist, or to follow in the footsteps of the Precursors).

So I can put anything here and people will see it?

to me, this raises more questions than it answers...

  • 09.03.2010 3:04 PM PDT

somewhere in the heavens...they are waiting. I love the Marathon Trilogy.
Halo CE will always be the best game in the Halo franchise. What a perfect game.
(Proud LONGTIME owner of the PC and Xbox versions of Halo CE)

Honestly I would explode with happiness, if MC is indeed now stranded in the Marathon universe. And that Bungie's next game will in fact be a Marathon game, I would be so happy if that is true.

  • 09.03.2010 3:52 PM PDT

I would love for the Halo story to tie in with Marathon somewhere but not a huge link just a like subtle nod to this theory.
