First off, i'd just like to say that in regards to the OP's post about which galaxy you were seeing... Most galaxies appear to look like Nebulas in the local group (Virgo Supercluster), only very few supermassive ones like Andromeda, Milky Way and Triangulum - ones that form around supermassive black holes, actually form into the familiar disc/frisbee shape.
In regards to the portal between the Ark and Earth... I would akin it more to a wormhole then a slipspace portal, it's creation method was different and it provided INSTANT transport between Earth and the Ark. The concept of folding space to produce a wormhole would easily explain this, rather then the slipspace approach where you travel faster by existing in subspace/hyperspace where the laws of physics don't apply.
When the chief and the Dawn entered the portal, whether slipspace or wormhole, the direction of energy flow (as dictated by the two ends) was only between the Ark and Earth, so most likely the rear of the dawn was thrown out somewhere along this path to Earth... or remains adrift in the vicinity of the Ark, having not entered the portal at all, and is near a forerunner world that was in the Ark's vicinity... possibly even the forgeworld in the centre of the ark itself considering it would be the only gravitational force near enough to the portal to be able to draw the dawn's rear section towards it.
I believe that it would be likely for the forgeworld to survive, because we're looking at a shaped explosive charge when the halo blew up (it's a frigging ring), so a majority of the explosion would be directed outwards, and if the forgeworld followed suite with most forerunner worlds, chances are it would have been mined hollow on the inside for resources to build Halos, and probably ended up being a shell containing something like a shieldworld or something.
