Has anyone seen the screenshots of Oni, one of Bungie's older games? The Marathon symbol is present in that game too. Heres one of the pictures, look at the object in the bottom left corner.

I've never actually played that game, but I don't think it has anything to do with Marathon, does it? And if it doesn't, then why is it so special that Bungie put Marathon symbols in Halo?
I don't really like to believe the Marathon theory for a few reasons. For one, and I hope someone pointed this out earlier in here. The star seen in the legendary cutscene is blue. Our sun is yellow. So if Bungie knows anything about astronomy, they would have made the star yellow is they intended that planet to be Mars. Chief is in a galaxy somewhere though. I say that because at the beginning of the normal ending, you see a nebula behind the ship. Nebulas don't exist outside galaxies. Nebulas are remnants of stars. There are no stars floating randomly between galaxies. And since the ark was outside the galaxy, you have to assume he is back in either our galaxy, or some other galaxy.
I have my own theory that I believe fits better into the storyline, and is taken from clues from the terminals. I wrote this theory in a forum somewhere else and people think it makes alot of sense. If you read all of the terminals on legendary, Mendicant Bias, the ancient Forerunner AI that went all Benedict Arnold on the Forerunners. He says he wants you to go to his makers and tell them he has changed, and is sorry for turning on them, something along those lines. here is the actual message:
"You don't know the contortions I had to go through to follow you here, Reclaimer. I know what you're here for. What position do I take? Will I follow the betrayal with another?
You're going to say I'm making a habit of turning on my masters. But the one that destroyed me long ago, in the upper atmosphere of a world far distant from here, was an implement far cruder then I. My weakness was capacity - unintentional though it was! - to choose the Flood. A mistake my makers would not soon forgive.
But I want something far different from you, Reclaimer.
Atonement.
And so here at the end of my life, I do once again betray a former master. The path ahead is fraught with peril. But I will do all I can to keep it stable - keep you safe. I'm not so foolish to think this will absolve me of my sins. One life hardly balances billions.
But I would have my masters know that I have changed.
And you shall be my example. "
From reading this you could say that Mendicant altered the portal as the chief went through it, sending him to Mendicant's makers, and that is where you see him on the legendary ending. Of course this is just speculation. Ive heard many theories and this is the only one that makes the most sense in the story. Alot of this information was found on Halopedia. I realize alot of the information on there isnt accurate, but you can always tell a good page from a bad one.
