There was a man from Allentown who fed his son to death.
He calmly watched him gorge himself until his final breath.
And there he stood, surprised and shocked above his tiny frame.
He said: "I bear no blame for this. I only share his name!"

I love the idea, and it would really clean up the forums, but I would be wicked scared to post anything.

If when you say "clean up" you mean "make the site a total wasteland" then yes I agree. It would really clean up the forums.
Quote someone smarter than me please. My opinion doesn't matter.

But it does.

Granted, the vast majority of the people who have been contributing in this particular discussion are either moderators/administration or members usually regarded as more active.

However, apparent new members are those that will be affected the most by such an implementation (well, would have been affected). Your opinion is just as valuable as ours.

At least to me it is.

I am definitely, strongly, vehemently opposed to a "scarlet letter" option for forum bans here; for the same reason I shut down cheater reports in the forums. There will be no witchhunts on my watch if I can at all prevent them.

I also do NOT want the ability to ban someone from MatchMaking for their forum behaviour, as the two are entirely separate activities. Admittedly, a jerk in one will tend to be a jerk in both, but there are enough exceptions I think to make separating the two worthwhile. Besides, I hate handing out bans enough already... adding more repercussions to the ninja dispatch button might make me hesitate.

Linked GamerTag requirement for posting in Optimatch I would definitely support; I remember the Halo 2 chaos all too well, and interpret this current lull as the eye of the hurricane. I would also support requiring a linked GT in the file share forums (fora?) so that, if nothing else, feedback would be limited to those who can actually see the content. (Maybe not the screenshots one, though.)

-- Steve knows that things ain't perfect around here, but hopes we won't throw out the good while trying to restrict the bad.

I noticed your post had references to two novels I had to read 3 years ago. Hrm, anyways...

Achronos has already spoken as far as cross-"platform" bans go. They're not going to happen. They shouldn't happen. I wholeheartedly agree with restricted access to forums, though. It would definitely get rid of a lot of trolling in some sections of the forums (though the most troll-filled forum would remain untouched, but that's neither here nor there).

The forum restriction wouldn't make the forums a total wasteland. They would (like Achronos said) help keep people from trolling. You're not against that, are you?

"Elitism" and "Exclusivity" have nothing to do with it - it has everything to do with eliminating the people who have no business in that forum other than to troll. That being said, there are a few issues that have to be tackled before we'd do such a thing, but it is in the long term "social plan" at this point.

Elitism and Exclusivity would still be prevalent (especially in the early stages if this is implemented) and the moderators would have to buckle down and dole out the pain to those who feel the need to be pricks to those with non-linked accounts. One of our younger, bright eyed and bushy tailed moderators comes to mind when it comes to doling out the pain.

Why are we seemingly trying to fall into the same rut that communism has in the past.

With a completely equal class structure (with exception to the "governing" party) and virtually zero chance of self-progression, very few people are willing to put forth any effort to better themselves.

I try to do my best to be open-minded and nice, but if I'm going to be viewed and treated with the same respect as a non-contributer or spammer might, why even bother?

Frankly, it's my love of Halo that keeps me here, and not the site itself. The latter is almost to the point of becoming a deterrent.

Well sounds like to me you want a title of some sort because you think are somehow better than most of the users which is... dumb. You may be mature enough to handle such a thing but it's quite apparent that these forums are filled with immature people who definitely couldn't handle it.

You're comparing an internet forum to communism? That's digging a little too deep, well maybe you're right. Look at the boarder for this certain forum.

I've said before that I'm not interested in self-agenda. I couldn't care less about...

Well, frankly, I don't see why I should bother much. I really don't think you'd be convinced otherwise if you had the intention of judging my concerns.

But make no mistake. There are people who care about the community. I just have a mental image of it collapsing under itself because of previous stubbornness.

Why Achronos believes that a group of two dozen individuals can maintain (maintain, not control. Discipline is one thing, but if they want to make the forums better, they need to educate) is beyond me.

They're not going to gain anyone's respect if they keep distancing themselves like they do. Members can only teach members with efficiency. Granted, moderators were members once, but I think they're too far from that position now.

At some point they are going to need help, and there won't be any to be had.

You might be right. But about the gamertag thing, I literally forgot my password, go figure. Like I said my GT was REALLY old and WAS linked to a username I had that got deleted after me going idle for a while.

Hell I guess it's time to let that account die anyways. I may just keep the one I have that's linked. I have a question though before I just decide this, can I bump this gamertag to a 3 month trial I buy after the 48 hours are up?

My understanding is that once created, an XBL-360 account can bounce between Silver and Gold status simply based on whether the subscription is in a paid status. Let a Gold lapse, it drops to Silver. Pay it up 3 months later, it goes back to Gold.

Your understanding would be correct

I am 100% for this. I'm getting very annoyed by the spamming and the people bypassing the bans. This would be a very good solution to the problem. Thanks for finding a good, plausible solution to this growing problem. Do we need to sign a petition because I will be there in a heartbeat. Just tell me were and when.

Okay, I've typed all of this up as I've read through the thread. Here are my thoughts, reasoned and balanced to the best of my ablities. Or patience. These are by no means my ideas, I've just summarized the ones I like and would support.

First things first: Members must be notified of the rules in some way or another. Maybe not letting new members post in a forum until they hit an agree button after a short summary of the rules pops up. In fileshare, the publish button could be easily fitted with a little notice outlining those specific rules too.

As for the forums, I've always thought, since the H3 boom, that the Halo 3 forum should be split into a MM and a Halo 3 Campaign forum. They already did it to Halo 2, and if any forum ever needed segregation it is the Halo 3 forum. Or, more likely, more emphasis needs to be put on the fact that Optimatch is the preferred MM forum, not the Halo 3 forum.

Restricting posting in MM and Fileshare (except screenshots) to accounts linked to Gold memberships would be ideal. No second accounts allowed. But by cutting it down to just the forums that are for discussing things that only "gold" members, you wouldn't have the problem of people not having access to other forums. The whole "walk the walk" thing, etc..

Now, banning people from MM. This could pose a problem (accidental or undeserved bannings), but that problem is easily circumvented by only allowing banning pending approval from "Bungie staff" a la Banhammer. The bannable offense would have to be rather serious, and could not arise from negligence (i.e. they have to know they're seriously breaking the rules). I like the idea of a "recommend for ban" option available to the moderators.

As for the Files Forums, the problem I see with letting downloads bump files is that there can only be so many files in the top... You would eventually have the same 15 files being continually bumped. It's a vicious cycle: a popular map gets downloaded and bumped, putting it on the top of the list again, then another user sees it, downloads it because of its popularity, and another user, and so on, just because of the file's popularity. Now, this may not be a bad idea except that it unfairly hampers the growth of another file that just got posted later. The first files to be around would be by far the most successful.

Now that I've seen how many ideas have already been worked over, it kinda makes this post a bit pointless, but oh well. And this is all coming from somebody who's only recently become active again on the site (I was active for a while in '02-'03, but as my new account shows, there was a considerable relapse). There's my input.

(random yet funny signature goes here)

What about those of us who don't play halo for the multiplayer and only play for the storyline. I could care less about multiplayer and xbox live, if I wanna shoot some people, I'll call some friends over or even set up a lan. I don't have live, and I don't really want it. Because of that I'm not allowed to come into the Halo 3 forum and discuss the story line and crazy theories. That's discrimination to us story players just because we're the minority and don't care about multiplayer. I openly disagree with that and if implemented I'd leave the community. Sure there's groups, but there's still plenty of reasonable and theories and posts over story line and forrunner are humans threads in the Halo 3 forum.

And as for seperating the Multiplayer aspect from the campaign aspect, we've tried that already, and it was an epic failure with a PH. Maybe now it could suceed with Achrono's new goodies he has in store for the site, but I don't think we need a Halo 3 forum and a Last Resort forum.
