In a lot of discussions on this board, I've observed people using details in the books as arguements, or bringing them up otherwise. Well you can't take every single detail in the book literally... because a lot of it is not true...

Bungie just wanted to give some further information, and make some money on top of it.

For example, in FoR, page 175...

"The Master Chief surveyed what was left of Camp Alpha. There were only fourteen Marine regulars left-balanced against the four hundred men and women who had been slaughtered here. He said to Kelley 'Post a guard on the dropship, and put three on patrol. Take the rest and secure the LZ'"

We can't take everything that is said there literally, just the basics. Are we supposed to believe that it was called Camp Alpha, there were exactly 14 marines left, there were exactly 400 marines there before, and at 1800 on July 18 in the year 2552 in grid nineteen by thirty seven, the MC said EXACTLY that?

No, of course not. A few weeks before the battle of Reach, a battle happened at Sigma Octanus IV where the Spartans were called in to do their stuff, with minimal Marine survivors.

The reason we can't take all of this literally is because there is a LOT in the books that contradicts the game, blatantly. A lot of it just plain doesn't even make sense, the game aside.

Bungie said to Nylund "Here, take this information we have, and make it an exciting book." So they had to embelish a little bit, and that's understandable... but please quit trying to use minute book details as plot hole arguements. Let me give some BLATANT examples...

On Sigma Octanus IV, the Spartans came down on a single Pelican, and left on the single Pelican... with 12 Spartans, 14 marines, and 20 civillians. Uh... last I checked, a pelican can hold 10 plus 2 pilots. Even if they all layed on top of each other... they could not fit 36 people inside one of those things...

FoR, 165...

"Harland strapped himself into the rear of the Warthog, one hand clamped onto the vehicles massive 50mm chain-gun..."

FIFTY MILLIMETER?! There is NO WAY that could be fifty millimeter, that's as large as frag grenads, the rockets are only 105mm... You can't rapidly fire bullets that big because they are no longer bullets, anything 40mm or above EXPLODES. Physically impossible to have that, not to MENTION that it says multiple times in the game handbook and stratagy that the gun is 12.7mm.

Harland also talks about Cochran being at his feet at the gun... yea, right. There isn't enough room to wrap yourself around the base of that gun, let alone KNEEL and fire a ROCKET LAUNCHER...

I mean come on, this is just BASIC stuff that I find flipping through random pages... I had a list of like 36 things completely wrong with the book, but I lost it.

I'm not saying the books are bad, or that they are COMPLETELY untrue, but there are major inconsistancies, and so we can't take them WORD FOR WORD.

-S

The books were passed by Bungie before publishing, so Bungie DID declare the novels to be official.

Yes, official. They want the main points accross, but obviously we arn't supposed to believe that the warthog gun is 50mm.

Well, Bungie said it's official, so it MUST be 50 mm *sarcasm*. Bungie published it being 50mm in the books, but said OFFICIALLY themselves that its 12.7mm.

Take bungies word... or take bungies word? ;-)

You never get books, or films or games even, without some sorts of continuity errors like this. Just let it go, all the things that are actually important to the plot make sense and follow along with each other, if you pick at tiny details you'll find holes in almost ANYTHING!

i also believe this is what it is. Also bungie declared it being official so in the halo world everything said is to be taken word for word unless it is a representational statement, Im sorry if there are a couple of things that don't add up, but the books in whole are very well writen with very little holes so quit complaining. Also if you looking for realism Halo isnt the game for you. Halo takes place 500 years in the future, yet besides space travel and cloning, the technology isnt that far advanced. Like the weapons, based on the current rate of advancement we will be far ahead of using cartridged shells that shoot lead and steel. Now that doesnt add up so why dont you post and that, and say the whole backbone of halo doesnt add up.
