Subject: Mods threads, the new Recon

So mods threads in here are like the Recon Armor threads of the H3 forum. Is it just people trying to get in position to be a mod or what? I've read a lot of complaints about mods or lack of moderation. Is this the new in thing for the cool kids to do or is it the only good topic for the Community forum?

IMHO, I think that there were valid questions regarding the mods in the forums. There were people who felt that the mods were not around enough, but as we've seen, they darkle and tinct, but they are aware. There was also some very good info that came out of those discussions (at least in the thread I was watching).

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

It's actually down by a very drastic amount from what it would have been this time last year. I think it's mostly due to the fact that we don't have a whole lot to talk about here, so we just kind of make stuff up to talk about some times.

We are also in a bit of a slump as far as moderation goes, due to many mods being inactive right now for one reason or another. This has led to an even larger number of threads than as is normal these says.

True, there was and I wasn't trying to make light of that. It just feels like a bunch of kids yelling pick me because things are instantly moved, locked or cleaned up.

This has been going on for a long time. Jonny-Forumgoer logs in day in and day out trying to become a moderator by any means.

This trend isn't new.

However you're missing the point of those threads. As of late, these threads have become very valid as we've got a whole new wave of forumgoers (Halo 3).

I get the point but I personally just see them as more of a "line up for modz tryouts" thing. I understand love for the community and a need to keep things tight in all the forums. I also see that things get taken care of fairly quickly for the most part despite 1,000,000 peeps hammering it. With this size of a community, and given it's user base, I expect things to be ugly once in a while.

Damn, now I sound like another - nevermind - I'm hungry

Well... if you wouldn't mind paying the lot of us around 45+K a year, sure... we'll all rotate shifts and make it a point to be on for at the very minimum of eight hours a day... it's not like we don't have lives, or jobs or families...

Thats Right I Was Banned For Watching The Webcams Too Much!Combat Arms - X647"He who'd walk a mile just to hold an empty hand, knows what it means to be a wealthy man."
Skin This Place Alive...

Check my stats, Im on the forums for at least 7 hours a day.
And I do get my work done too.

Right now im on the forums ALOT for free :P
getting paid to do it would just be a bonus for me

As for the mods we have now, I think they are doing a great job and yes there are way to many "I wanna be a mod" threads

I don't think the OP was asking about the "Hey, how do I become a moderator" threads. I think he was talking about the numerous threads in this forum asking:

- Why don't I see any mods online?
- We need more mods.
- What are we going to do about all the spam, flame wars, duel accouts, H3 forum, etc?
- Culture of B.net is declining due to lack of moderating

But all these threads should be moot since Achronos has come out and said that they aren't appointing new ninjas anytime soon and that he had some new tools coming to help the current mods.

It makes me giddy just thinking about it. Like a school girl.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Recon Thread
-Helplessly repetitive
-Extremely numerous
-Not unique
-Serves no community purpose

Moderator, etc Threads
-Growing in number/frequency
-Not too prevolent
-Significant degree of uniqueness
-Most aim to better the community

Now if you'll compare the basic principles of these two examples that this thread is about, they are fundamentally different. Yes, they are both "flavor of the month" threads, but at least the latter are educated, and often (while it may not seem that way) self-less. Just be happy we still have some virgin Forums here.

This is a cycle. Things are quiet then we have a little "drama" in the Septagon followed by questioning of moderation.

It has happened twice .....three times in my year and a half of being here. Nothing new really.

But on a side note- Recon threads are so annoying. At least we don't have 10 mods threads being made every day lol

Yes, even though I'm sure that there are some uh - what did NinjAg call it? Oh that's right. Jonny-Forumgoers. I'm sure that there are some Jonny-Forumgoers running around here, but the threads concerning mods are generally mature and respectable discussions. And even though Bungie is not a democracy, it sometimes can be good for members to question whether or not everything is going all right on the administration level.

Not that it should necessarily concern the members. But this forum is open to that sort of discussion, and it gives us something to talk about. Because even if the thread's idea is totally off, at least we have something to talk about.

True, but most of the people stand by their opinions on whether or not we need moderators long after these threads.

Just because it isn't talked about doesn't mean no one is constantly thinking about it. It's a little funny to look and see how Achronos is one of the few people who said we don't need moderators. It might just be a different perspective he looks at the forums from. (I could be wrong, but I thought most members said we need more moderators, and only a few said otherwise)

Ah well, in the end, I assume Achronos knows what's best. He seems to have done a pretty good job on all the other aspects/features of the website and forums.

Agreed. Heated debate =/= immature flaming. I enjoy these threads about moderators, etc. It brings out the best, and worst, in all of us.

Yeah, I think that with the new tools the mods will have, perhaps less will be more. We'll have to wait and see.

OK.
- Both have people asking for something they are not going to get.
- Both have people trying to impress someone in to getting something
- Both have a ton of different ways of all saying the same thing
- Both have a vast array of unique ideas and justifications on why they should get something

Now don't take my post the wrong way, I am just messing around. I know this is a cycle and what not, I just don't see it as a huge issue but what do I know, my member is short. I mean my member date is short. I mean I haven't been here that long so my opinion is less valued. Ooooops wrong post. BTW, can I get a new tool?

I don't mean to say that we need more. The threads are valid because the promote positive discussion whether one agrees with wanting more moderators or not. I'd much rather see threads that deal with the community that get 100+ replies rather than "Screenshots not updating, halp", "How do I get recon armor?", etc. Achronos has mentioned giving you guys more tools and that more moderators is a last resort thing. If these threads weren't created, we'd have no reassurance (the fact that you guys may get shiny new toys is reassurance for me). Thanks for the sarcasm though, I apprecate it. :)

Because, like I said earlier, I think those threads are valid because they at least promote some discussion that isn't whining about Halo 3.
