With that being said, people in this thread have talked about older users attacking newer users, yet nobody has proposed the obvious solution. A new rule "Due to the problems with elitism any user who attempts to use date of joining to attack another member should expect punishment"
I think making that an official rule, and enforcing it, would help out quite a bit.
I saw this post in another thread and I thought it was an excellent idea. I think this rule, if enforced, could not only stop some of the new member abuse, but also remove those elitist users who do things like this. I dont want to take any credit for this, I simply thought it warranted a thread.
EDIT: To expand on this, direct flaming is against the rules, but I think this should be put in specifically, so that it will be used more, and will be a more direct deterrent. Those users who use join dates obviously care about their accounts, and if giving a direct statement saying "If you attack with join dates youre gone" they will probably stop, because they value their accounts.I see no problem with a flexible enforcement of a "no-attacking-join-dates" mantra along these lines, except that it must be flexible. In many situations, join dates are completely irrelevant. A user who attacks another based on join date should probably expect punishment under certain, but definitely not all circumstances. It is clear that in some situations, join dates are extremely relevant -- namely in terms of threads that are obvious (or even not-so-obvious) trolls or otherwise controversial.
This is the kind of thing that I would expect individual moderators to enforce based on their own personal judgment, but not the kind of thing that could effectively work as a blanket rule.
