"He who strikes the first match is responsible for the fire."

Needs a bump, sorry Bungie - but I really need an answer. It might make my time, and others' with the same question, in your community much more enjoyable. :)

-Quaere verum.

Got a report? Use the report tool or send a pm.
Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

I assume you're asking if it is possible to block a user with the direct result of no longer being able to see their posts or threads. The answer to this would be no. It is only possible to block a user from sending you P.M.s if they've sent you one. If a specific user or users annoy you, simply avoid them.

I shall move this to the Community forum in order to discuss your implied proposal of giving users this option.

"He who strikes the first match is responsible for the fire."

I've looked everywhere I am seeing to look and I cannot find the function for blocking posters, other than the "block" function in my Message Center.

Am I missing something, or can you not just block anyone?

This will be a much more rewarding message board experience for me if I can just block everyone who gets under my skin...

Thanks for any help, in advance. :)

"He who strikes the first match is responsible for the fire."

Ah - sorry for placing this in the wrong forum, and thanks for the move.

Most message boards I use have "Ignore" functions as a basic option, and I think it would *really* benefit the Bungie Community significantly to have one here, as well.

Look - I'm no angel, nor am I a hypocrite - so I have to fess up to falling for The Internet Argument on many occasions. Give me a boring day at work and someone on here annoying me and it's a potential recipe for disaster. I already had a 3-day warning ban for indulging my annoyance one day and I've sworn not to repeat the error - but having to sit there and take flak from argumentative, generally ill-tempered posters who habitually demonstrate this sort of behavior, but who don't outright break the rules such that they can be reported and thrown off the boards entirely, just makes me and I am sure others not want to come back here at all.

And I don't think that's the result you're looking for, Bungie.

Considering the competitive nature of Halo multiplayer, the virtual-testosterone tends to run high...and "avoiding" users isn't really an option, if by "avoid" you mean "don't be around them." If someone decides to start a flame war in a thread there's not much you can do about it besides just stay quiet and take it which, again, doesn't really engender one to further participation.

Like I said, an "Ignore" option is pretty standard functionality for a message board...I have to think that Bungie, of all people, could add one in pretty readily, and it would probably save the Forum Ninjas boatloads of work having to referee stupid fights on the boards.

Anyway, thanks again for moving this to the appropriate place.

But why would you block them if they haven't even attempted to PM you?

"He who strikes the first match is responsible for the fire."

Not block - Ignore. It's different.

An Ignore function usually prevents you from seeing *anything* that person posts. So, let's say that Joe Schmoe really, really gets on my nerves. I right-click on his name in his post, and a window pops up which gives me an "Ignore member" function.

If I select this function, I will never, ever see a post from Joe Schmoe on the Bungie forums ever, ever again, which means for me the quality of the Community as a whole just improved dramatically.

It's a brilliant function to have on a message board and, like I said, it's pretty standard functionality nowadays. I'm actually shocked that Bungie doesn't have one on here. I looked for about a half hour one day and was totally blown away that I couldn't find one.

Gotcha. Not sure if B.net has that capability, maybe Achronos will see this and verify whether it's even possible.

"He who strikes the first match is responsible for the fire."

Well, Gods Prophet said above that we *don't* have that capability, unfortunately. :(

He moved this in here to see what people thought about adding it. I'm hoping that other people will chime in and say that they'd like it, as well.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

No, you can't do that on BNet currently.

I don't dislike the idea, but I have to say that I would never use a feature like this. When I read these forums, my eyes go to the name of the poster before reading the post; therefore, I find it easy enough to skip over posts by people who tend to post spam or flames and little else. The worst posters usually end up getting blacklisted and their posts disappear anyway (although sometimes it takes a bit of time before a mod can get to it).

I guess I understand your desire to remove the temptation of flaming people who post things you don't like, but I would be worried about not being able to follow a discussion if I ever used something like this. Like you and pretty much every other BNet user, I have the occasional bad day where I end up flaming people I don't like rather than discussing or ignoring them. But on the whole, I find that self-restraint and patience is the better recourse than pretending that certain users don't exist. And I don't really like the thought that somebody might never see anything I post again just because I had one bad day.

So to sum it up, I totally see your point, and at this point I don't really see an extremely compelling reason that something like this shouldn't be on BNet. But at the same time, I would never use a feature like this, and I don't really see a need for its implementation to make this place more enjoyable.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I wouldn't mind a compromise with this.

Not being able to see the persons posts ever would just wreak havoc on the continuity of threads. You may just keep posting stuff that was already discussed, but not seen because of blocked members.

Instead, perhaps their posts are hidden. You can still see their name (no avatar) and the fact that they posted, but you aren't forced to seeing their message, less you mouse over their name. Just like how a person's avatar is hidden until mouse-over, so could the posts of blocked users.

This way, in case a decent conversation exists, you aren't eliminating the possibility of just ignoring the input of others, which has an equal potential as anyone else's.

You know, if someone is being a jerk, PM a moderator. There's plenty of tools you can use to see which one's are on, ranging from getting their MSN contact address (if you use MSN, check their signatures and such), to the Moderator Finder right here.

Everyone has the privilege of being heard, and if they're misusing that privilege, they don't have to participate in the forums. At least, until they can behave. You'd be better off reporting him so no one else has to put up with him either.

"He who strikes the first match is responsible for the fire."

But you can't PM moderators just because someone is being a jerk. They have to cross a line before their behavior becomes actionable.

I understand the point about just not reading something by someone you know to be problematic, but I've never had problems on other message boards with lack of continuity through an ignore function, for the reason that the sorts of people who tend to be ignored are also the sorts of people who tend not to contribute anything productive to a discussion. Therefore, it's not like you missed anything [i]other[/i[ than their bad behavior by ignoring them.
