Subject: An Idea for the Cleansing of the Underground

Ach! Was ist los?

I have no idea if this has been suggested before, but here goes:

As we all know, the Underground, our beloved forum for Bungie General and Oldschool topics, now has such a poor signal-to-noise ratio that it has become nearly unusable.

Why?

Because it's at the top of the list. New people and people who haven't read the rules assume that it is a place where they can post anything and everything.

What can we do?

Move the Underground. Take each forum listing and put the Halo 2 forums at the top. New members with Halo 2 questions will see those forums before they see the Underground, and hopefully post their crap in New Mombasa or Zanzibar.

On the other hand, it might also drive off the few who actually have topics that belong in the Underground.

Thoughts?

That might just work. Maybe more logical grouping of the forums would also be useful. Like a "games" section, and "Bungie.net" section.

How about renaming "the underground". Name it "Old Skool" or something instead.

Wouldn't Old Skool include Halo as well? Or is that still too new?

My thoughts exactly. This is also the reason why the Flood isn't bombarded with (as much) stupidity, and seen as the last refuge. Hopefully it'll happen.

Interesting, I had a similar thought today as well. I made a post in the underground about it, and here is a direct quote from it:

I had a thought. There is still a lot of useless threads popping up in the Underground. Why? Because it is the default forum. People who sign up for the first time, see this forum first. Chances are, they don't care what goes on here, they just want the stuff that is specifically for Halo 2. And apparently, the big caps lock stickies that say "HALO 2 TOPICS BELONG IN THE NEW MOMBASA FORUM" are not noticeable enough for some people. A solution? If it is possible, we should make New Mombasa the default forum, so that all of the new members, as well as the not-so-new-ones, that just want to talk about Halo 2 will be automatically sent to where they need to be. Of course, it may come as a slight inconvienience for the usual posters of the Underground, but i think it would be a small price to pay to have this forum cleaned up a bit. Just my two cents.

I think you'll find sanity's overrated. I don't miss it much.

This has come up before; I mentioned changing the forum listing order in a Septagon thread, I think back in September or October but I can't get Google to find it so I'm not sure. I remember finding out soon after that someone else had already made a similar suggestion.

The idea's been floating around for a while. Pity it hasn't been implemented. Perhaps there's some kind of problem it'd create? I dunno... I haven't done anything like build a forum, so I'm at sea here.

On the bungie.net homepage the forum link goes straight to underground forum...which is lame. The forums link on bungie.net should go to the forum mainpage.

Yeah, I agree. I thought they were going to fix that at some stage. No offence to anyone, but how hard is it to change the url of a link?

bah

You have to realize, new guys always make mistakes, and they do have a right to post anywhere they want as long as it's on topic. We'll never have the "Old Underground" back again. Ever. Some time from now, x months from now, when Halo 2 has gotten old for all those who are unworthy, we'll be back to a slightly smaller community again, which is what many of us seek. We seek friends that we know really really well, and we want to speak with them, no new guys. But the new guys are important, and as long as they don't post off topic crap, they really do help keep this place active.

A search function for this site would bring me back full throttle. I like the Xbox.com forums' ability to monitor all your recent posts too. This keeps good topics alive. Add that or a search function Achronos. I'll even help! (I'd be worse at it that the Webmaster though...)

Based on my limited understanding of web technology, it shouldn't be that hard to rearrange the links in a single sidebar.

--Sgt. Smith is not a professional web designer, though.

  • 12.15.2004 4:26 PM PDT

bah

A lot of Bungie.net is "hardwired" so it flows more smoothly. Stuff like avatars are integrated into the site, so adding them is harder than it would seem. It may be the same for the sidebar.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

I believe that all forum purification topics go in the Flood...

I think that there should just be an older members forum. Say, oh, six months here needed to enter. Then forum experianced members could go to talk... Just an idea. It would be a general forum, but I doubt thats ever going to happen.

I think that that's an awesome idea.

If we made it so that you had to be here for 6 months before you could go into the Flood then we would loose Vella.

No, that would suck. Say you had joined 3 months later then you really did. You'd be the same person, probably make the same posts you make now. But then you can't have access to that forum? No. There are plenty of decent new users. If anything, that private forum access should be based on the "Karma" idea that has been discussed.

And quite frankly, I doubt we can do much about the current situation. Like I said in a thread a while back, the "forums" link leading to the Underground is bad, but most problems are caused by common human stupidity. It's everywhere.

I told someone this a few weeks ago in a PM, the "Forums" button should not lead to Underground.

Why would you tell Maka? Hes just a Mod... Your better off telling Shishka or Achronos.
Edit: i see youve changed that... oh well.

I edited it because now that I think about it, I really doubt it was Maka. I never really post topics about what I think is wrong with the forums functionality or talk about it with people who have the power to change it. I guess it's a phobia.

I agree. It's discrimination, which is hardly a good thing.

It's discrimination against those who may be good people. Now, if we could have a forum for only intelligent people, that might be interesting. There are plenty of such people here. I don't know how you'd test over the internet for that intelligence. Maybe a Bungie trivia quiz that you have to pass to enter? It gives you the quiz every time, so even those with no once of brilliance would eventually wisen up and be able to pass! :)

But just thinking of all the new guys who've impressed me from day one goes to show that there are exceptions to the rule that older is wiser (although that is still the rule).
