Subject: An Idea for the Cleansing of the Underground

Ach! Was ist los?

Agreed. No "Special User" forums.

--Sgt. Smith still thinks the link fix would be a good idea, though.

And enough of thse pointless "I agree" posts!

As topic author, I felt I should make it clear that this is not a place to promote elitism.

--Sgt. Smith notes that Bungie was traditionally a community where people were polite and intelligent.

  • 12.16.2004 10:35 AM PDT

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Its not eliteism, it's like a refuge. Or there could be a really really boring forum description that would make nobody want to go there. But we would know that we can really discuss intelligantly there.

I'm disappointed that no one noticed I had misspelled intellectual...

Anywho, a forum on the main site that had a purpose of exclusion would be an OK idea, if it was based on the hypothetical Karma system that Achronos and Sketch were working on. But as outlined here, I don't think it's a good idea.

It would indeed seem elitist to many, and cause much more issue than you think in the forums. People would want to know why they couldn't go there, and just cause Bungie a lot of grief.

There are plenty of Chapters and groups to join if you want intelligent conversation.

Elitism is fun, and while we're at it, why don't we add another post counter? And appoint Mods randomly, or based on the quantity of said posts? That would be fun, wouldn't it? /sarcasm

Yep. That way we could kick all the mods for not posting all the time, and drag some idiots from the flood in who're always on.

Bungie.net would be saved!

I don't want to say that SPAM forums is a good thing but the Underground may do us a favor as being linked to the front page. It acts as a road stop for thoes who don't read the rules or what the forum is about. If they are too lazy to read the rules they will be too lazy to look for the septagon. In away the underground spam forum keeps the spammers from here.

How about linking it up to The Flood? The Underground doesn't deserve such punishment.

You have to realize, new guys always make mistakes, and they do have a right to post anywhere they want as long as it's on topic. We'll never have the "Old Underground" back again. Ever. Some time from now, x months from now, when Halo 2 has gotten old for all those who are unworthy, we'll be back to a slightly smaller community again, which is what many of us seek. We seek friends that we know really really well, and we want to speak with them, no new guys. But the new guys are important, and as long as they don't post off topic crap, they really do help keep this place active.

A search function for this site would bring me back full throttle. I like the Xbox.com forums' ability to monitor all your recent posts too. This keeps good topics alive. Add that or a search function Achronos. I'll even help! (I'd be worse at it that the Webmaster though...)

i noticed...but i didn't want to nitpick.

and an intelligence test is the best idea so far. that was the first thing i thought of when i read the initial post. when practiced properly, discrimination is an awesome thing. the stupid people would stay out and the smart people wouldn't clutter up the boards with "how do i get bungie.net behind my username on xbox live threads?". in fact, if there was an iq test, someone from somewhere would probably get in trouble for something. so in an effort to keep the forums clean, just make the forum link take you to one of 9000 threads about how to get your username to have bungie.net in it. then they can go into the actual forums once you've read and confirmed that how to.

No, it wouldn't. All that I was suggesting is that there is a place that the better members can go (Call it Eliteism if it'll help you sleep better) to speak intelligently to one and other. You can't have a society based on the fact that everyones equal. That's called communism, and we cann all see how that didn't work out. If the wasn't some sort of motivation to be a good member, then the forums will go to hell. Right now it's just becoming a mod. or for the better, older, elite, whatever you want to call them members just for being part of the Bungie community.

Apparently being recognized and listened to isn't enough motivation to be a good member anymore.

How about for starters getting rid of the stupid petition that is stikyed. It is a shame that the most popular thread is one that violates the rules.

Yeah, no offence, but who pinned it? I can't see how a petition got up there.

[Edited on 12/19/2004 3:40:20 AM]

I pinned it. We know it's against the rules (duh), but it was decided it would save us a helluva lot of work if "the" halo movie thread was stickied. I made the *original* Halo Movie Discussion thread (it's gone through like 5 iterations now) in order to centralise halo movie discussion in a single thread. I stickied it so there would be no excuse for not seeing it and posting duplicate threads.

Then, it got unstickied, or deleted. The Halo movie threads began to multiply again. So I stickied the new Halo movie thread (the one you know and love today). I hope this is a reasonable explanation - we just wanted to make sure that fifteen Halo movie threads wouldn't knock good, intelligent, ON-TOPIC threads off the front page. We want the same things as you guys. Well, mostly. I dunno about the banana kebab thing.
