Subject: So what can we do? (Community Initiative)

Twitter | Nothing

What can we do? The answer depends on how willing the community is and how much we want to improve it. I’ve seen a lot of threads about how this place has gone to the dogs and how much better things use to be. Heck I’ve even made a few myself. But the thing is, they never solve anything. In fact they tend to make matters worse. What usually happens is people misinterpret or disagree and things get ugly. I think most of the people who are complaining just want Bungie.net to feel more like a community rather than a collection of people who play Halo.

One of the problems with this community is the sheer size of it. There are a lot of active accounts, people who check once a week and people who jump on several times a day. With that many people it’s easy for things to get out of control. You are bound to get some idiots who turn up just to cause hassle. Everywhere has them, you just have to suck it up and ignore them. If they don’t get a reaction they won’t do it as much. When they do get a reaction they think they are great and go on to cause more grief.

And yet almost everyone who visits this site has a shared interest, Bungie’s games. But we still find the need to be competitive and try to outdo each other. Some seem to think that they need to be popular. Some think they should just sit and watch. I bet most of the people who come to this site have a lot in common with everyone else.

So you want this to be more like a community? Good, but instead of complaining about it why don’t we try to do something about it. Lets have some constructive discussions about how we can improve and get more people to interact as whole. There are a few people trying to do this right now. Just look at Mike D Halo King’s Community Spotlights. They aren’t brilliant but they are engaging the community and trying to get more people involved.

Now saying all that, this community is far from terrible. In fact I’ve had some great times here. There are ups and downs all the time, but we can always try to improve. If you have any ideas about how we could try to connect everyone a little more or how we could attempt to interact as a community then please share. The only way we can make this place better is to discuss and act out the ideas from the discussions. And if we are really lucky and try hard someone higher up might help us out.

So what can we do? It really does depend on what you want to do. Lets hear what you want to do...

I'd like to think that the main force that really drives people to join a community and then participate actively is the content. For instance, reclaiming the Community Spotlights from the sands of time was an excellent idea in my opinion. It allows you to meet an individual who has contributed to the bungie.net community actively, and continues to do so. The only problem with that thread, obviously, was that was quickly derailed and thrown into a blatant flamefest by a few jerks who slipped in, and people who chose to argue with them.

Any creative ideas for new content would be welcome to me - things maybe we haven't seen before, or things that have been brought back, like the Spotlight. I'm not too awfully smart, though, so I honestly can't think of any original ideas myself.

I do remember in one of the previous community disscusions that turned sour (dunno which one?) someone mentioned a sort of community council.
We talked about it for about a page before it got derailed again. Its a good idea, but needs to be better and improved than the previous "Septagon Council".

I do have to agree that more moderators would help more now since theres a large amount of new members due to Halo 3, but I think someone stated that no new moderators were going to be added anytime soon.

I wish I had more ideas to post, but I'm very uncreative when it comes to makeing new ideas :P

I think content is something that would definitely help. The Community Spotlights were great, and I especially enjoyed doing mine =) I think a return of a regular Community Spotlight would be very welcome and appreciated.

A community council could be a very interesting idea, and if we could discuss that further to see how we would go about making it work. I never really saw much of the Septagon council so I don't know how it worked, but from what I have heard it sounded like a good concept.

Personally I think that although more moderators might help to stop some more idiots from spoiling this place for the rest of us I don't think it will specifically assist Bungie.net into becoming a better community. A community with less idiots yes, but better? I don't know. Nice ideas so far though, lets keep this going.

EDIT: I forgot to add that Achronos has already said that there won't be any new moderators soon, but did hint at something new to help with the forums.

I've always seen this forum as the unofficial community council. People throw out ideas here, and we discuss them. To truly gage the temperature of an idea, why not expose it to the largest possible audience? Which is right here. Even if there was an official community council, they would have to test the waters with their ideas here anyway. So why not just bring your ideas here in the first place and skip the middle man?

Achronos has already stated a few times that he is not going to appoint any more mods anytime in the forseeable future.

One idea I had is to push the boundries of the Gallery Forum to include any sort of creative Bungie related piece of art, montage, machinima, short stories, etc.........and not just caption contests. I love to see people's creative side, and right now there's not one dedicated forum for people to post their stuff. So we have short stories in the Flood, Halo 3 montages and videos in the Halo 3 forum, and members having to link us up to other off site areas to view their pics and videos.

Why not extend the content paramaters of the Gallery Forum for people to post any Bungie related creative piece of work?

The Council Chambers are still open, the chapter I mean. Though we long since stopped posting there as we were pretty much told their would never be a council. As for ideas; there have already been quite a few posted in this thread, also; I'd personally love to see the Bathroom Reader back in action. Though with Jim having interwebs problems right now I'm not sure if that is going to happen. I remember the old days, and a part of what made them so great was the interaction. There were great chapters, but these chapters didn't stay isolated like todays chapters, they were a known and active part of the community regular,\. Maybe this is something else we should encourage.

As for the change: Times change, people change. It's adapting to this change and evolving with it that counts. This community failed to do so it seems, though I'll admit, if we do do this, it will be a fairly good start. I support and even encourage such ideas. Let me know if you need any help, I'll see what I can do in my spare time.

Good to hear JAF. Remember Team ACS? With the state of chapters today maybe it's time to bring it back. Maybe.

This idea I think would be something that could very easily be implemented and could help a lot. I know that theres been quite a few people that have been creating comics using the screenshot feature from Halo 3. Perhaps the Gallery forum could be made to accommodate all kinds of fan created content like you suggested.

Yeah, I agree. Interaction is the key. If we can get more members to interact with each other and in projects together then I think this would improve the community incredibly. Things like the Bathroom Reader were great little additions. More things like that would be awesome and would definitely help. What other things could members of the community come up with and create.

I'll let somebody else get in with the joke, because it will be no doubt better than mine. But I look forward to seeing your thing. (Bad choice of language I know).

Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

Bah! Humbug! (Man, I love that phrase)

I would say “Don’t fix what ain’t broke,” but then not only would I be adding a drawl to my speech (which is rather unlike me), but I would be lying a bit. There are probably things that could be improved. But that’s neither here nor thar. Dammit!

The only way to “fix” the community is to “fix” oneself. The true test of how good this community is is to look at ourselves and ask how we’re doing as members. Are we contributing? Are we treating all members, young and old, with the respect they deserve as human beings? Are we personally doing what we can to improve the community? If the answer to those three questions is “yes,” then there should be no worry. As far as I can tell, most people would be able to answer “yes” to all three. But I tend to see things like community involvement and overall intelligence from a much more liberal point of view than most people.

If people are giving real answers to questions, are helping the mods remove spammers, are trying not to flame whenever possible, and are doing what they can to contribute to the community’s social capital, then we’re fine.

And as far as I can tell (I don’t know if Achronos has some sort of Community-ness Meter or something), we’re just fine.

what does it mean when you have a open nat how do you fix it

  • 11.04.2007 9:41 AM PDT

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

As members, about the only thing we can do is what we've been doing: just keep pitching ideas (regardless of how good or bad they are) and support those that do have real powers.

Outside of that, we're just going to have to wait for Achronos to initiate his new implements to the site, though there's really no telling when that will be.

Until then, we're all going to have to get along, for better or for worse, and stop trying to out-play each other.

A lot of people seem to want the same thing (myself included), but we in no way represent the majority of the community.

Far too many people's voices are not represented in this case. They have the same potential as each one of us, so we can't just ignore them. So the question I've been juggling with in my mind is, "Do we have sufficient motive and responsibility to make that decision for them?".

I want to say "Yes.", but I really can't trust myself to be making that decision on behalf of the community, and not on the behalf of my own interests.

Edit: typo fix

Improvements are always better. The bungie.net community is just a lot of sub-communities ranging from forum specific to group specific users. Some if not most of the regular members are content with these forums.
I suppose I'm trying to ask you which part of the community.

If you don't vote in an election, the President will still make decisions that affect you. I think this forum is the best place to propose ideas, mainly because it's the only place where it's allowed. A community council seems unnecessary, and would probably only cause problems in the long run. We all know the members who are trustworthy and deserve our respect, that's good enough.

I do agree that a council has virtually no benefits what-so-ever, but I have a few comments about your second point.

Yes, most of us can agree on a handfull of members that are trustworthy and whatnot, but that's only our sub-group's preferences. As Gnome pointed out a few posts up. there are many sub-communities that make up Bungie.net.

I can't just say to ignore them because our views and ideas are usually more wholesome than theirs, as the reprocussions to them may be so severe that it completely destroys the infrastructure here. If we select a group of anti-flamer, no-tolerance, punishment-mongers, then that's what our community will become. I feel that I can't let that happen.

It's either that, or we let things go on as they are now. I don't think there's any way to tell which way will be better. I think if we got some more moderator-member working togetherness, it'd be a start. I'm pretty sure there is already plenty of that, though. We also have Achronos' new inventions coming out, so those will only help. I think it would be prudent to wait until then, and then see if there is anything left to be done.

From what I've been able to tell, the whole plan of Member-Moderator teams has not been as well performed as it was theorized. It seems that a lot of threads in other forums go on for pages and pages without a single person sending any warnings or anything like that.

But if Achronos' new toy(s) is(are) as useful as we are imagining it will be, then....uh...huzzah!

I would have to agree, but don't talk about that, it's kind of off topic and why the last thread like this got locked.
