Which proves that the Spike TV awards were a joke, considering it beat out DOA: Ultimate.

DOA: Ultimate wasn't really that good. I've always thought the fighting system in those game were terribly broken, countering in perticular.

Even if it should have won, does it really matter what a mainstream show hosted by snoopdog thinks of a game?

Didn't think so.

I'd have agree with the poster above, DoA:U is far from the best fighting game of the year...its fun and has more depth that regular button mashers...but not something you can take seriously. Then again, contenders don't really pop into my mind at the moment...fighting games have been dying a slow death.

I would have gone for GGX2 #r, but that's basically a game that's been long out in Japan, and a rebalancing of an older title. Besides, who's going to pay attention to a $20 xbox fighting game?

Fighting games in general are a bit off the mainstream path. While great fighting game players are legendary among the people who follow fighters, I doubt they'll ever reach the "pro gamer" (oxymoron in itself) status that is afforded to FPS players.

Its ironic though, the First Video Games award on TV was won by none other than MK...

yah DOA really wasn't that good, plus it didn't have the roots of Mortal Kombat... (which sorta revolutionized gaming in both fighting and violence levels) so I think it was awesome that they won....but then again, thats just my opinion.

It never revolutionized fighting, only violence and motion capture technology in games. The series has always been stiff and ineffective, with boxed combos and cardboard characters. Back then, people put up with it for novelties`sake, but in hindsight, it was simply awful. The new MKs descision to mimic that style for nostalgia`s sake was a mistake, as it was never good to begin with.

Was Guilty Gear even nominated? The only worthwhile fighters this year were GG and SF anniversary, and GG edges that out slightly in my opinion. I would assume they were disqualified for being 2d.

I hate this planet.

hmmm, yah I guess you are right with the fact that it basically wasn't that great at the time, but at the same time, it created quite a stir in the media for its violence. So perhaps that is what really drew the audience? I mean I can remember loads of times playing the first game on the Nes systems, and always trying to learn moves, get gory fatalities, etc etc....

It just seems like it created an almost 'cult' of fans, and I guess they spoke out louder then the fans for DOA.

It is a cult...I'm pretty sure one of my closest friends is like a chapter leader...she's crazy about it. Boy was she disappointed when they killed of Liu Kang.

It was the gore that basically drew people to it, SF had it beat in gameplay hands down (of course I was still a fireball whore back then)...I mean you can't expect to have a deep fighting game when the only thing that differentiates your characters are the special moves...But eh, I admit it was entertaining...when I was younger at least.

Here's the list of nominees for that category:
Def Jam: Fight For New York (Electronic Arts)
Dead or Alive Ultimate (Tecmo)
Fight Night 2004 (Electronic Arts)
Mortal Kombat: Deception (Midway)
WWE: Smackdown! vs. Raw (THQ)

No 2-D. Everything was to 3D. Big pain in the arse that great titles are often overlooked because they don't have lens flair.

GG, SFA are just ports with xbl thrown in...I don't really considered them games made this year. So I wouldn't have added them to the poll either. There is still a pretty huge 2d fighting game community. Lots of 2d fighters are still being developed too. Most might fall under your radar because they're mostly being pumped out by SNK now...but you can still find em. I can't wait to see what SNK does next year on the atomiswave. I don't think they've lost their touch or soul or anything because of the bankruptcy either. So don't even mention that.

I'm a pretty big SNK fanboy. I still play aroud on my ngpc a lot...MOTM is the best fighter ever. Better than sf3 even. I swear. It's the best.

True they were just ports...but I guess the same could be said for DoA:U in a way.

Lol, good ole SNK, pumping out a yearly edition for KoF for the masses. Terry is still the man imho, better than Ryu in that he does have a personality. Besides, his engrish is so much cooler.

Hopefully on the Atomisvision, they bother redrawing those sprites...granted they aren't as bad as some of the stuff seen in Capcom Evo, but reusing sprites is a bad habit. And balance their characters...it's not funny having a god tier character in the ranks...and you thought the pistol was overpowered...

Personally I'm itching to see how the GG series is gonna evolve considering Isuka flopped and the roster is getting pretty big.
