You've got to try it! At first it's pretty hard to get into because it's so complex, but underneath it's quite a rewarding experience! Imagine mixing StarCraft and Half-Life into a multiplayer-only game where the Marines get hi-tec equipment from their commander, another player who actually watches over them in a top-down perspective, lays buildings, and researchs new guns. The aliens are independent, but have the Hive sight so they can coordinate attacks and defense. Aliens can evolve into 5 different forms, ranging from a fat pig-like builder to a rampaging rhino-type thing. The maps are huge, full of resource points the teams must fight over, a Marine start (of course they can build anywhere), and 3 alien Hives they must acquire and defend. If you don't like the complicated strategy, you can play in combat mode and simply kill the enemies to level up and get stronger. There is a link to the Natural-Selection page where you can learn more and download it in my signature. Of course, you need a working version of Half-Life to install it, but it is free.

My name in NS is [PL]TerranGrunt in case you ever see me.

Sounds kind of cool, but I imagine it must suck if you get stuck with a noob commander

Absolutely right. That is probably the biggest problem today - stupid Marines that let the team down. And since the aliens don't rely on each other as much, it doesn't really hurt them. Ruins the game sometimes, but if you look hard you can find a "professional" server or a clan server where everyone plays seriously.

There are two teams: Marines and Aliens. The Marines are led by commanders. The Aliens work together, but have no leadership.

I love playing it offline (I make waypoints for offline bots) more than I do online. It seems to lag horribly online. Sure, I have 56k, but I have a 150 ping on CS (on any given server) and about 450 on any NS server. :(

That's my problem with ANY MMO game. Take Battlefield Vietnam, for example. Half your team is too busy dicking around flying their helicopters, and the only time that they worry about securing flags, the actual objective of the game, is when they can't spawn anymore and your team has lost. It's frusterating.

Another gripe I have about NS is that everyone runs to the Alien side so they can rack up more points, rather than work for the Commander. I prefer working for someone else in the game, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy a few combat maps. :D
