I think in halo2 the humans will find the artifacts and will have to protect them from the covenant

if you read the books they dont entirely glass the planet Reach because there was one section that they knew was the fore runner object. they intercepted a ships' memory, one that didnt use the cole protocal and found the direction to earth. read the books they are very good and intriguing

thats not how they found earth, the mc, linda, and james went on a mission specifically to destroys the circumferences nav database and if u read they were succesful. i think they found reach because they followed that guy back to earth. in the chapter at australia where all those high ranking ppl are. they say he didn't take the necessary procedures for the cole protocol and that he had the fastest time baack to earth. so i think thats how they found earth.

oh yeah, good point mithrandir. however with the sheer size of the covenant invasion fleet 500+ it looks like they've known for some time
My Mistake! i realised the meeting was 2 weeks ago from the invasion gathering! thats probably how they found us

yes i've read them all and at the end the prophet states its a minor setback and nothing will stop the holy journey or whatever. which obviously means they will reassemble the fleet get new ships and create a new armada thats equally as stronger or even stronger. all i'm saying is that they have space superiority and could've glassed earth and finished it with ease if they wanted to. so there must be an artifact or something of equal value which is the only reason the earth is still there

My theory is that...

Not only are there Forerunner artifacts on Earth, but Covenant honor dictates that they defeat the homeworld of their foes on the ground, using conventional infantry/vehiclular combat. Defeating an enemy in skill is worth more than blowing them up from a distance?

ye but before the hunters we're part of the covenant they defeated their worlds via orbital bonbardment until they surrendered. (its in the xbox and pc official strategy guide) so why would earth be any different

would the covenant risk so many casualties on the ground unless it was really neccessary?
