From what I understand the rings destroy all life, it does not destroy every thing in it's path. So what and who is it to judge what life is and why does the flood not qualify as life? And if the rings can determine what life is why can't it determine a flood life from that of a human?

From what I know the rings destroy all life. but not all the planets ect. If it did destroy all the planets and the fact that Halo was already fired means Earth would not be. So if it was already fired why can't it destroy all flood instead of there food? I mean how can it tell the difrence between a floods life and a human? Wouldn't it make more sense to kill all the flood instead of it's food?

How do you the rings can't discern between flood and humans? And the Forerunners probably programmed the rings to destroy all sentient life.

EDIT: It's probably impossible for the rings to kill flood, so they have to kill their food. Halo can only destroy sentient life, so plants, animals, flood, etc. aren't affected.

I think what it means is that the flood would still find a way to survive, much like cockroaches. They would survive the blast from halo, but it's food wouldn't, so it has nothing to feed of and they on. So it is just like nuking roaches.

If a stupid organism could survive it I think some humans could also.

OH jeeze, the ring does destroy the flood by destroying their food, don't you get it? Its not like the ring would destroy itself or shoot lazerbeams at every single flood form, the ring works like this: If the flood are released then the ring will kill them by destroying their food.

Look, with roaches or flood, it's not that they're smart. The Flood would probably survive because if any small part of a parasite survives then they can grow, but humans and most sentient life are fragile and easy to kill. So the ring is powerful enough to kill all the sentient beings without just annihilating the whole galaxy

Let me answer. I'm pretty sure that the ring kills everything that is not on it. It doesn't kill the flood, just everything around the ring. So the Master Chief, nor any one else on the ring would be harmed by it. The flood would eat everything on the ring, but, if they were to steal our ships (like they were trying to do on the Truth and Reconciliation) they would have no were to go to find food, thus they could not live, they would all die until they probably hibernate (like they did before the human and covenant came) Well, atleast that's how I think of it.

How would the ring kill humans and what not without blowing up planets? Cortana said it has the ability to fire deep into space. So does that mean that by destroying the planets you destroy the life?

It would be some sort of pulse, not an actual blast. Like ultraviolet-rays, it has a blast radious, and a range, but that just means how far and where the beams would travel. And like what some guy said before, it kills everything not on the Halo, the flood would therefore be unable to spread.

Admittedly, it is an odd logic, killing life in order to preserve it. But the Forerunners are most likely on a higher level of thinking than us, and their logic would seem incomprehensable to us. And since the ring has a range, perhaps life beyond that range would survive. The forerunners in this instance, are saving all sentient life in existence, by sacrificing a universe-worth of it. Again, advanced level of thinking, a higher form of being.
