I was considering having my Xbox modded but when I mentioned it to a friend of mine he flipped out and told me that my Xbox would be marked and my Live! accounts banned. Does anyone know if this is true or not? Help me out here so I dont make the wrong decision.

Don't do it.

And discussions about modding XBOX are banned from these forums, for the same reason.

Yeah, I'm not modding mine (particularly because it's a LE Halo Edition), but I would like to experiment with doing so in the future, I might get my friends old box if he gets a new one (he has a really old, one with the original DVD drive) and mod that, or buy some cheap parts on Ebay and put one together to mod. But I will NEVER play on XBL with it, not worth getting my account banned for.

I'm thinking of doing visual mods on a used XBox just to see what I can do, but the hardware I won't touch. The XBL servers can track it (Even though I just want mine to play some NES games and maybe a hacked Marathon with the XBox controller.... -- But You won't be able to use it for LIVE, and that's just not worth it.

Modding an xbox does NOT ban your xbox live account just your xbox itself. If you buy a new xbox and recover your account you will be ok.

Why is talking about modding an Xbox forbidden? It is not illegal to mod your Xbox, since you own it. You can do whatever you want with it (drop it from a building for example). Only using those modifications at Live (because else you get pwnd) is not allowed. Not that I have modded my Xbox. Don't know how, and I don't care.

Xbox mods are not supported by Microsoft and may be illegal under the DMCA. If you mod your Xbox, you are willingly voiding the warranty and potentially breaking the law. If done improperly, modding could damage your Xbox.

They may, in fact, do that anyway.

Anyhow, under no circumstances is xbox modding discussion allowed on these forums. Well, unless by "modding" you're referring to surface modes, such as stickers or paintjobs.

There was a patch on XBL that detected the size of your hard drive and if was above the normal level, then they would terminate your xbl account.
