I hate to sound stupid, but i honestly did not understand one bit of this. Is there like any easier way to explain this?

And also, I need this cleared up. How quickly your rank up, is it like based somehow on your how much exp you have? Like I am a 49 brigadier, and I was playing with a 49 major. We both got our 49's at the exact same time, and he got his 50 first. And I still can't get my 50 :(.

Uh oh! The truck have started to move!

I am so glad I took statistics last quarter, or none of this would have made sense to me. From what i can tell from your explanation, mu is your win/lose average, while sigma is your standard deviation from that average. This whole system is easier to understand if you know what standard deviation is. Basically, it's the average amount that you deviate (or attain an amount outside of your average) from your average. This means that if you are a fairly consistent player, then having a win streak or lose streak will affect your sigma more drastically than if you were a less consistent player.

I never thought I'd ever use all that statistics crap outside of school. Lol!

Very nice description....I could have sworn that MVP and other in game stats had some weight, but your explanation shows how they may not.

The sigma True SKill uses is not really sigma (standard deviation). They drop it regardless of performance. It is just a plug. If they used real sigma, streaks would matter.

I dunno if this has been answered, or if it even has anything to do with TrueSkill, but I feel a need to ask anyway.

On my profile on Bungie.net, the ranks I see are lower than the ranks I saw in game. I haven't played in a couple days because I went on vacation to a place away from my X Box.

Is it possible to lose ranks when you're not even playing? That would just be absurd. If it's not that, then the server used for displaying stats must be lagging behind. But it's been at least two days and I would think it would have transferred the info by now. Lol wut?

matcmaking sucks @$$ it is the worst i have ever seen in bungie history. there is so much lag, that u cannot even play an even match. Its always like 2-4 or somthing. wtf is up with team br's every other time????? its -blam!-ing bull -blam!-!!!!!!! why the hell would u want to play br's every time???? out of 50 matches that i have played in the last few days, i had 2 that were normal!!!! that is so -blam!-!!!!!!!! Bungie needs to get their old playlists back, and get rid of the Bull--blam!- lag!

just another fan-"Xerxes: OMG Leonidas u nub! Stop camping in th3 choke point!"

could someone explain what happened with my rank today?

if you check my game history, i won 4 games in a row, against my rank or higher opponents, only went up one level, lost one game against higher opponents and went back down to 32. How exactly am I supposed to rank up? If winning consistently against higher ranks doesn't help, do I have to have a perfect streak to even maintain my level? Should I just try a different playlist?

As you can see by the game history, I usually go between +7 and +17 (at least lately, but very very rarely negative), and I highly doubt I belong in the 32 skill range. If the system can't see this, what do I do? My K/D has been steadily rising every time I play as well, and I hardly run into tough competition, yet my rank refuses to move. Am I just screwed?

Please don't flame, I just want an answer.

You skill level after game 4 rounded up to 33 and rounded down to 32 after game 5. Pretty sure game 6 will give you a rank back up unless there is poor match quality. You skill level is an additive equation.

i'm having a hard time understanding how many games it should normally take to gain rank/lose rank. my goal as of right now is to get to 40. how many games should i need to win?

when i start ranking into higher levels, is it going to take more for me to lose skill as well? it seems that i lose a level every time i lose a game, which lately has been rarely.

Here's my friends team slayer life...he was teamed with me and his bro from 18+...thought I'd offer actual data...1=win 2=loss

(LVL 1) 121111221222111111222211111111 (LVL 18) 11112111212221222111112111111111111111121 (LVL 42) 21221 (LVL 39)

53 wins
23 losses

42 Highest Skill (39 now, for some reason he and his brother were d/c from a game and they both dropped 3 ranks) [I was in the same room on the same connection...they didn't quit...but during pelican loading screen they got d/c but still lost exp...]

He goes up every win (I say that starting from 18), and down every loss... I'd make a graph but my Excel doesn't work anymore...

well my account is MLG Omega Rush and me and my Teammate won like 10 games in a row and we arnt even 41 so we are still playing and we lose the game and we went down to a 39 probably the most stupidest thing ever after we won like 10 we have about 2 loses now out of a total of 120 game

Depends on how many team slayer games you have played (the playlist I assume you are referrring to). The more you play and start to have losees, the more you will stabailize and find it harder to rank up. Your rank seem volitile right now still, so you probably havent played too much yet and can probably do it in less than 10-15 games if you win most of them.

I wish it did take into consideration how well you did in the team standing, because the other day,I lost 3 matches in a row because my randomly matched teammates decided to quit, or they got dropped. I led the team in kills all 3 times, got mvp despite the loss, and only lost by a point or two each time. I especially hate it when you have a guy or two on your team that goes -13. I am not a good FFA player and Team Slayer is my next closest rank to get my 45 skill and brigadier. I wonder if I will ever get it, because due to circumstances like that, I have lost 2 skill levels from my highest skill of 43.

Very enlightening and well written. I think you're right about one's sigma increasing after constant wins because I've been on a streak lately and I'm annoying my friends by leveling up by two every couple of games. Thankyou.

Personally Bungie's stat system can go -blam!- itself. The whole thing is so stupid makes really no since at all. Win 10 games don't rank up get real. Halo 2 stat system was so much better because you know what you had to do and how many games to rank up and rank down. now in halo 3 your at high hopes because you could never rank up on how ever many games you win. What puzzles me is how kids get these 50s so -blam!- easy and god only knows how many 50s i have beat the hell down. Majority of lvls are bad very bad and it puzzles me on how i can win win win everytime and still be in the shadows. Stupid and none of you can disagree with that.
